TURNING POINTS EYES MORGAN SCHOOL

NEWPORT – Turing Points is experiencing a surge in student population and is outgrowing its current location.
The program's directors now have their eyes on the former Mogan Elementary School, E. Taylor Hatton, as a possible future location.
Morgan decided last year to close the school and send students to Derby. What to do with the building remains a question.  The possibility of locating Turning Points to the Morgan facility will be discussed at Town Meeting in March.

MAYOR SEEKS THIRD TERM

NEWPORT CITY – Over the past few years, Mayor Paul Monette has been in the forefront of developing his beloved Newport and the surrounding area.
Monette, who has been mayor since 2009, is seeking to retain his seat on Town Meeting Day next month. He is running unopposed.
Before becoming mayor, Monette was a member of the Newport City Council. Monette said he is running for mayor again because "The job is not done.... More needs to be done as far as development in the city. I want to see all of the positive changes actually happen.”

CHECKING IN AND OUT AT NORTH COUNTRY

NEWPORT- A new security system is now in place at the entrance to North Country Career Center (NCCC) where students, school personnel, and visitors must pass to access the center and high school.
The system was first used by the high school for students who arrive late or leave early from class.
Interim NCCC Director Eileen Illuzzi said the system is used to make sure that no one with a criminal background that precludes them from being on campus, or someone with a restraining order in effect, will be allowed entry.

NCCC SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT

NEWPORT - A public meeting will be held Feb. 20, starting at 6 p.m. at the North Country Career Center in its first step toward planning for the future vocational needs of young and adult students.
“I don't want to lead this process,” states Illuzzi. “The community's input will be the basis for developing a plan for everyone to use the facility. It is important to articulate goals, to develop new learning skills, learn what future courses may be offered, what businesses are looking for.”

ORLEANS FIRE

February 10, 2013

ORLEANS - A late night fire displaced a family Saturday.
Firefighters responded to 33 Irasburg Street at 11:23 p.m. Upon arrival firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the back end of the home. Firefighters had the blaze under control in two and half hours and out at 4:30 a.m. They cleared the scene at 5 a.m.

The Need For Speed

NEWPORT CITY – The thunderous roar of engines and hundreds of cheering fans could be heard for miles around Lake Memphremagog for the annual Fire and Ice Radar Runs. Snowmobile enthusiasts with a need for speed raced on the lake behind the Eastside Restaurant Saturday for the annual event.
Typically the event brings out a few dozen racers and a couple hundred spectators.

ON THE AIR WITH VAL DAVIS

DERBY – The new voice on the radio that many are waking up with every day across the Kingdom is that of Val Davis, the new operating manger and morning host with WMOO.
Davis has 40 years of broadcasting and technical experience with numerous radio stations and ABC television news. He is enthusiastic about the community.
“There’s something magical about being part of peoples’ lives. I want to be here for the people,” he said.
“There is wonderful community involvement,” Davis said about the changes at MOO 92 under the new ownership of NEK media mogul Bruce James.

LANDFILL WANTS MORE

COVENTRY – A dozen or so area residents met at the Coventry Community Center Wednesday to talk about a New England Waste Service of Vermont (NEWSVT) permit application to increase the amount of trash it accepts.
The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, part of the Agency of Natural Resources (ANR), conducted the meeting.
NEWSVT wants to increase its daily tonnage from 2,500 to 5,000 with an annual limit of 600,000 tons. The facility’s permit now limits annual tonnage to 370,000.

ANN JONES: I’M A PEOPLE PERSON

DERBY – Ann Jones of Derby is running for the Delinquent Tax Collector job now held by Mary Ann Tetreault. Voters decide every March who will hold the one-year position.
Jones said she just learned about the position last year when Tetreault was elected. Previously she thought it was a job that automatically went to the town clerk. After learning more about it and the process involved, she has decided to go for it in her first time seeking public office.

FIRE IN GLOVER

February 6, 2013

GLOVER - Wednesday evening, the home of Edmond Renault went up in flames.
According to Deputy Sheriff Phil Brooks, who was on the scene, a liquor control agent spotted the fire on Dry Pond Road (Rt. 16) just south of Glover Village. The same agent spotted Renault standing outside the burning trailer and had him get into the warm vehicle.
Renault was taken by ambulance a little later.
Fire departments on the scene included Glover, Barton and Orleans. As of press time, the cause of the fire was unknown.
