Utilities prepare for superstorm

VERMONT – Local utility companies and those across the northeast and eastern seaboard are preparing for the behemoth storm predicted to hit with fury over the next few days.
The Northeast Kingdom and other areas of Vermont are under a high wind warning beginning Monday afternoon and continuing into Tuesday morning. In Vermont, winds are predicted to gust up to 60 miles per hour, and up to 80 mph in the western slopes of the Green Mountains and at higher elevations, above 2,000 feet.

LOWELL - An armored truck took out a utility pole and rolled onto its side before bursting into flames in Lowell yesterday.
The Vermont State Police, the Lowell Fire Department, and other responders were called to this rollover Thursday morning.
State police say Eric Jones, 43, of Burlington, was driving this Loomis Armored Truck on Route 100 in Lowell when he lost control, went off the east side of the roadway and collided with a utility pole before coming to a rest on the passenger side of the vehicle.
The engine then burst into flames. The driver escaped.

SMASH AND RUN

NEWPORT CENTER, VT - Police arrested a Derby man after he allegedly used his vehicle to ram the personal vehicle of an off duty police officer before leading police on a high speed chase.
Police said that early Wednesday morning, Brent McClure, 23, of Derby, targeted Newport City Police Officer Richard Wells' personal vehicle. McClure rammed Wells' vehicle several times along VT RT 105, causing Wells to temporarily lose control of his vehicle.

JR HIGH RENOVATIONS COULD COST $1 MILLION PLUS

DERBY - Robert Favali, director of building services for engineering firm DuBois & King Inc., provided a “rough estimate” to the North Country Junior High School Board for all of the projects they are contemplating. These include HVAC heating and ventilation projects, insulating, replacing energy inefficient or non-working pumps, switches, control units, mechanical units, plumbing improvements and others items.

Students Plan Walking Path

DERBY - Assistant Principal Colleen Storing provided the school board with an overview of a 3,500 foot long walking path that starts at the school and wraps around part of the Derby Pond area.
Storing said the path is being designed by Ben Partridge of Lake Hills Landscaping who provided an estimate of $31,500. With $10,000 already committed by the board, Storing was seeking funds to complete the project and listed a number of fundraisers that would be used to raise the balance of $21,500.

A divided Supreme Court upholds Lowell Wind permits

LOWELL – A divided Vermont Supreme Court Struck down several appeals by the Lowell Mountain group (LMG) and the Towns of Albany and Craftsbury. The appeals challenged the Vermont Public Service Board (PSB) orders regarding the Lowell Mountain Wind Project.
Green Mountain Power (GMP) received a certificate of public good (CPG) from the PSB to construct a 63 megawatt wind facility on three miles of ridgeline on Lowell Mountain. The project is highly controversial and has become an extensive legal battle.

JAY, VT - Two dozen representatives from the Agency of Commerce, Northeastern Vermont Development Association, Lyndon State College, Community College of Vermont, Department of Labor, and the North Country Supervisory Union, including Superintendent Dr. Robert Kern, high school principal Bill Rivard, and interim North Country Career Center Director Eileen Illuzzi, and other supporting agency members, met at Jay Peak Ski Resort to discuss economic development plans.

Poundstone on the Line

DERBY LINE – Comic legend Paula Poundstone will grace the Haskell Opera House stage Friday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. She will hold another performance Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Bellows Falls Opera House.
Poundstone, originally from Sudbury, MA, started performing stand-up comedy at open mic nights at the Charles Theater in Boston at the age of 19.
“Some people would describe me as the class clown,” said Poundstone of her school years. “A lot of people would describe me as annoying.”

STANSTEAD, QC - In a press release dated Oct. 19, the offices of NDP (New Democratic Party) Members of Parliament, Jean Rousseau (Compton-Stanstead) and Pierre Jacob (Brome-Missisquoi), stated that there is evidence of human smuggling going on across the Stanstead border, coming from the United States and entering Canada. The two took this position after obtaining a document from the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) through the Information Act.
