WATER FIGHT SET FOR TRIAL

NEWPORT CITY – A case between the City of Newport and Village of Derby Center is set to go to trial Monday, Nov. 26, over a water contract.
In 1997, Derby Center agreed to supply water to the City Industrial Park in Newport.
“Things were going along pretty well,” said attorney Christopher Smart, who represents the Village of Derby. “Under the agreement, our understanding was we had the right to change our rate schedule."
Historically, users on the water system paid a minimum charge.

Morin Files Sole Petition in Derby

DERBY – Interim Derby Town Clerk and Treasurer Faye Morin is the only person to turn in a petition for the upcoming special election Nov. 27. She filed for town clerk, town treasurer, and school treasurer.

NEWPORT CITY – Substance abuse continues to be a major problem in the Green Mountain State. Last Wednesday, the Community Form Coalition, with the assistance of entertainers Wayne Warner and Emily Nyman, presented “It Can’t Happen To Me” at North Country Union High School auditorium. The goal of the program was to create awareness of the impact that substance use and abuse has on the entire community.

GOP Candidate Wants Bernie’s Job

NEWPORT – John MacGovern, a Republican from Windsor, is vying for the U.S Senate seat held by Bernie Sanders.
MacGovern is travelling around Vermont and meeting with farmers to hear about their concerns and about the challenges they face, and is working towards solutions.
MacGovern grew up on a New England dairy farm, but says today's farmers are facing different problems from the past. The most common concerns he has heard are problems with labor, the high cost of grain, and other rising costs.

Hydro Deal to Ease North Country HS Power Bill

NEWPORT, VT - The high school board has agreed to enter into a contract with Missisquoi River Hydro to purchase power from the North Troy generation plant. The agreement is expected to save the high school 10% of their electric costs or up to $1800 per month.
The State of Vermont has a “net metering” program that encourages the development of green energy sources by allowing, in this instance, the hydro company to partner with power users to make the energy more affordable.
The high school will purchase electricity at a 10% discount versus what they would have paid VEC for the same usage.

Lake Region Girls' Soccer Coach Brad Urie Suspended

ORLEANS-Brad Urie, the head coach of Lake Region’s girls' varsity soccer team, has been suspended and will not be on the sideline for Saturday October 20th's season finale against Hazen.
Urie, in his sixth year with the program, had coached the team to a 10-3 record thus far.
The Rangers are the third ranked team in Division Two and have a senior day prepared prior to their contest with the Wildcats.
 According to LRUHS Athletic Director Eric Degre, ”Coach Urie will not be on the sideline Saturday. He is not fired. This is a personnel decision and I cannot say anymore at this time.”

JUST IN TIME

NEWPORT CITY – Thanks to Gilman Property Management, the affordable housing crunch is about to improve.
Gilman is nearing completion of the Lakebridge Project at the former Sleeper Place site. During of tour of the complex Wednesday, Diana Beleau, marketing specialist for Gilman, said the project is set to be ready Nov. 1. It will hold a community open house Friday, Nov. 2, from 1-6 p.m.
Construction crews have been working hard at replacing and renovating the former complex, which used to have 14 units, with 21 energy efficient units in five buildings.

THE LAST TOWER

LOWELL – The final wind turbine in the Lowell Mountain wind project called Kingdom Community Wind is fully assembled. Now 21 wind turbines that are about 450 feet tall each span across three miles of ridge line on Lowell Mountain.
Construction employees worked into the night Wednesday to finish the final turbine. Reed and Reed raised the American flag with their crane once it was assembled.

Bullet Knocks Out Power

BARTON - Power was knocked out for 13 hours to nearly 3,000 customers including the Ethan Allen plant on Wednesday.
A utility worker discovered that a bullet was lodged in the main power transformer for Barton and Orleans Electric. The bullet caused oil to leak out. The oil is used to keep the machine cool and, with no oil, the transformer overheated and caused the outage.
The incident is under investigation by the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department and the Vermont State Police.
Nothing was stolen from the location, police say, and the motive is not yet clear.

The Canadian company, renowned for producing a high quality organic maple syrup, happens to also be the leading producer of equally high quality maple production equipment. It’s occupying the former Desmarais Equipment building.
