WHERE DOGS ARE KING

October 8, 2012

DERBY – The new Kingdom Dog Park in Derby is now open. A grand opening celebration was held Saturday.
Despite the rainy weather a large group turned out and nearly 100 dogs enjoyed romping around in their new playground.
Ann Kelley, her husband Bob Kelley, their daughter Ally, and many volunteers have worked on opening the dog park for more than two years.
The Derby Dog Park Committee and many people from all over voted for Derby to win the Pet Safe dog park contest. Derby prevailed in the second round and won $25,000.

CLYDE RIVER HOTEL SELLS

BRIGHTON - The Clyde River Hotel, built in 1866, was sold on Friday at a foreclosure auction to Guy and Sharon Daniels of Island Pond. The Daniels' already own the Avalon Inn and Hobo's Restaurant.
Guy Daniels said he plans on closing Hobo's permanently and moving the kitchen equipment and focusing their efforts on the hotel. He also said they received an offer on the Avalon Inn within minutes of purchasing the Clyde and will sell it.

RED CROSS NEEDS YOU

NEWPORT, VT - Thinking about donating some of your time to help others, but not sure where? Why not consider the American Red Cross?
The Red Cross needs volunteers to be part of the disaster response team in the Northeast Kingdom. The response team typically responds to fires and floods, bringing food and drinks to the firefighters and helping the victims with shelter, clothes and food. 
The Red Cross loses 30 to 35 percent of volunteers annually due to personal, conflicting commitments.

PAUL’S TURNS 40

DERBY – For 40 years, area residents flocked to Paul’s Sugar House dance hall to shake their booty. Yesterday, all those dedicated fans paid tribute to what has become a local institution.
Paul and Rhina Letourneau opened the dance hall in 1972. The hall was a dream of Rhina but she passed away in 1979. Paul, with the help of family members, kept his wife’s dream alive. Paul's son Leo is pleased the dream continues. He said his father loves the business and spends a lot of time there.

MORIN NAMED DERBY TOWN CLERK

DERBY – Faye Morin is the new interim Derby Town Clerk and Treasurer, at least until the March town meeting. She was appointed by a divided select board Thursday evening during a special board meeting.
Select board members Brian Smith (chair), Laura Dolgin, and Steve Gendreau voted yes, while members Beula-Jean Shattuck and Karen Jenne abstained.
The select board had held a vote on the issue Monday evening at their regular select board meeting but there were not enough votes to make the appointment. Dolgin was not present Monday. Jenne and Shattuck abstained from the vote Monday as well.

Newport Fire Dept. to Hold Open House

NEWPORT CITY – October is Fire Prevention Month and Sunday starts Fire Prevention Week. To kick them off right, city firefighters will open their station to the public.
Any Orleans County resident may attend the open house, which will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents will be able to sit in a trailer that resembles what a house filled with smoke is like, tour the station, interact with firefighters, see the equipment and enjoy refreshments.

TROY CONSIDERS $1.38 MILLION BOND

TROY – Troy voters are being asked to vote in November for a $1.38 million bond to renovate the aging school building.
“The school was built in 1978 and we’re still dealing with that technology here in 2012,” said board chair Jennifer Daigle. “As a school board, it’s our responsibility to address any concerns and safety issues of our school and bring it to community members’ attention and hopefully get their feedback and support on correcting those items.”

IROC Seeks Tax Free Status

DERBY, VT - IROC is in a deep hole - close to drowning but trying desperately to keep its head above water.
IROC is facing foreclosure in April for its inability to pay the $7,700 per month mortgage payment for the facility and still owes about $1.1 million.
Not only is IROC asking several towns that use the facility to financially help IROC every year, but it is also seeking tax exempt status from the state.
IROC would voluntarily pay the town taxes, IROC’s executive director Phil White said in a statement.

DERBY TACKLES OLD WATER PIPES

DERBY LINE – Village trustees are discussing ways to replace some of the aging and small waterlines in the village following a report that the lines may hinder firefighters on Elm Street.
Tuesday evening, Wayne Elliott, vice president of Aldrich and Elliott Engineering, lead the discussion. Derby Select Board Chair Brian Smith, selectman Steve Gendreau and village residents also attended the meeting.

GERMAN WINDOW MAKER HEADED TO NEWPORT

NEWPORT – A German window manufacturer plans to open its North American headquarters right in Newport.
Menck Windows is slated to open on the proposed biotechnology campus. The former Bogner facility off the Lake Road in Newport was already purchased for development. The window manufacturer will open a 40,000 square foot facility on the 40 acre campus.
Bill Stenger of Jay Peak Resort unveiled the surprise plans at a conference last week at the resort, and again in Newport with his partners and Vermont's congressional delegation alongside him.
