IROC PREPARES TO CLOSE

March 24, 2013

DERBY - The Vermont Economic Development Authority (VEDA) rejected financing in the amount IROC needs to survive.
Thursday, VEDA agreed to finance up to $750,000 and required contingencies such as cash on hand solely for the use of paying the VEDA debt under the agreement. However, this amount is not enough to make it work, said Phil White, executive director of IROC (Indoor Recreation of Orleans County).

IN MEMORY OF MARY WRIGHT

DERBY – Saturday night at the Elks' Lodge the lights were turned down low and music from the Bad Luck Band was pumping as a huge crowd shook the night away at the Cabin Fever Dance All Night.
The Mary Wright Halo Foundation sponsored the event. The family of Mary Wright founded the organization after her death in 2011 to help cancer patients as the community had helped Mary's family during her time of need.

MAPLE LOVERS POUR INTO SUGAR HOUSES

DERBY – Maple producers across the state opened their doors to the public for the annual Maple Open House Weekend. About a thousand people traveled to Jed's Maple Products on Saturday at their new location in Derby for the event.

METH CLINIC OFFERS HELP

NEWPORT CITY – On any given morning, approximately 65 individuals make their way to the Behavioral Health Services (BAART) clinic on Union Street for their daily dose of methadone before going about their day.
Until Feb. 25, BAART dispensed methadone from a van parked at the recycling center on Coventry Street. BAART moved the dispensing site to the office site because of security and safety concerns for staff and clients, despite the fact that, in January, a gunman tried to rob the office for drugs.

LOVE MAKES IT WORK

DERBY - When Amy Jacobs was expecting a child two years ago, she knew she was at risk but made a choice to have her child and love and support him no matter what. Now Amy and Bart Jacobs have a beautiful boy, James, who will turn two in April.
James was born with Down Syndrome, a condition caused by an extra chromosome. The condition is associated with mild to moderate intellectual disability, a characteristic facial appearance, and weak muscle tone in infancy according, to the government’s genetic reference webpage.

UVM EXTENSION RELOCATES

NEWPORT - The University of Vermont Extension Office in Newport has found a new home in a large historic building on Main Street in Newport. The office was formerly located in the old hospital located on Highland Avenue. That building is slated for an apartment development complex and current tenants are relocating.

WAYNE'S CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS

TROY BOND UP FOR FOURTH VOTE

TROY - Officials and friends of the Troy Elementary School are asking voters for a fourth time on March 28 to approve a bond for renovations and repairs to the school. The school board will hold an informational meeting at the school 7 p.m. March 27. Voters will accept or reject the vote by Australian ballot.   

NEWPORT TOWN GUN SHOP ROBBED

NEWPORT CENTER - Thomas Snay, 66, owner of Bear Mountain Sports and Crafts on Farrar Road in Newport Center, walked out of his home yesterday to plow his driveway and saw footprints going to his business. Inside of the business, he saw that several of the guns he had for sale were gone.
The burglary happened sometime Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

IRENE IMPACTS MORGAN HATCHERY

MORGAN – The annual release of brook trout fingerlings will have to wait a few extra weeks as the fry this year are smaller than normal. Hurricane Irene, which tore through the state in August 2011, damaged several of the Fish and Wildlife Department's fish hatcheries. Consequently, the Morgan hatchery received only 45,000 eggs from a hatchery in Virginia last year, but this year were given 92,000 eggs by Fish and Wildlife.
