Today is both the U.S. Presidential Inauguration Day and the day honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
All government offices are closed, including the post offices. Banks and schools are also closed.
GUILDHALL â€“ Kasey Parsons Sweatt and Aaron Sweatt, both 30, of Canaan VT, entered not guilty pleas in Essex County Court Jan. 8 to charges of possessing 200 milligrams or more of heroin. In addition, Kasey Parsons Sweatt entered a not guilty plea to cruelty of a child less than ten years old.
Judge Mary Miles Teachout released the couple on conditions, including a condition that they not have contact with their three minor children, ages 2, 4 and 10, without DCF approval.
DERBY - The Derby Planning Commission wants voters polled on their feelings about wind turbines within the town.
Planners had discussed the issue at a meeting weeks ago and had voted to recommend the select board draft a question to poll voters at Town Meeting. But the select board did not settle on a question. Last Monday, planners again discussed a non-binding vote and came up with the question to recommend to the select board.
The question was phrased: â€śAre you in favor of industrial size wind turbines in the Town of Derby?â€ť
JAY - The ever popular Jay Village Inn restaurant, bar and hotel has a new look. According to owner J.R. Hamel, change was needed.
"The reason for the project is that as Jay Peak expands, we have to keep improving as well," he said. "AprĂ©s-ski is a big thing in town, so the best area to expand was the bar and sitting area. A friend of mine from Georgia, Craig Reed Construction, did the project, adding over 400 square feet to the bar area.â€ť
There is even a new expansion upgrading the bar.
"We put about 20 more seats in here and service tables out in the eating area,â€ť Hamel said.
BARTON â€“ On Dec. 6, 2011, Nicole and Justin Mattenâ€™s seven-year-old daughter Kaylynne Matten died. Nicole Matten blames her daughterâ€™s death to a reaction from the flu vaccine she received days before.
Since Kaylynneâ€™s passing, the Mattensâ€™ world has been turned upside down. The couple is going through a divorce and Nicoleâ€™s home is in foreclosure.
â€śWeâ€™re just trying to raise enough money to stop the foreclosure proceedings and get a loan modification so we can keep the house so the kids donâ€™t have to go through any more devastating changes,â€ť Nicole said Wednesday.
NEWPORT - Vermont State Collages have teamed up with the Department of Labor and the Vermont Department of Commerce and Community Development with a goal of filling the thousands of positions expected locally in the near future.
Jay Peakâ€™s Bill Stenger and partners announced major development plans last fall for the Northeast Kingdom. Who will fill these jobs, and what training is required remains in question.
JAY PEAK â€“ Jay Peak Resort can now boat that it hosts the worldâ€™s first Burton Board Training Center.
Bill Stenger, president of Jay Peak Resort, and Jeff Bolida, vice president of Global Resorts for Burton Snowboards, cut the ribbon at the opening of the all new Jay Peak Burton Board Training Center.
As Stenger stated, â€śIt's not often you can say you are the first of its kind in the world, but we can with this opening.â€ť
Bigger than life carved figures from "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" welcomed children to the center.
NEWPORT CITY â€“ In the wake of the Newtown, CT, school shooting last month, lawmakers across the country are considering stricter gun regulations. However, Vermont legislators, at least the local ones, say such regulations need to come from the federal government.
â€śThatâ€™s a federal domain, I believe,â€ť said Sen. Robert Starr from North Troy. â€śThey dictate what happens and when it happens.â€ť
NEWPORT - Band director Bill Prue and students Zack Tweed and Rebecca Young provided the North Country Union High School Board last Tuesday with a review of last spring's trip to Disney World in Florida. The field trip wasn't only about having fun, said Prue. â€śThe trip addressed standards of music, it's relationship with other mediums, and proper etiquette.â€ť
â€śMany of the 57 students haven't traveled outside the Northeast Kingdom, much less flown on an airplane,â€ť Prue observed. â€śThat in itself was quite an experience.â€ť
DERBY â€“ Itâ€™s official. The Northeast Kingdom will soon have its first Walmart, as soon as the project can obtain its permits.
Developers along with local and state political leaders announced plans Tuesday to build a Supercenter Walmart on the Derby Road, across from The Tavern.
â€śThis is an example of how we create jobs in the Kingdom,â€ť said Gov. Peter Shumlin. â€śThis region of the state has always suffered from higher unemployment rates than the rest of the state.â€ť
