VELCO preps for improvements

ORLEANS COUNTY – The Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) power lines and poles in the area may not up to safety standards and potentially out of compliance. A proposed work schedule is underway and VELCO is planning to file for a Certificate of Public good this month.
VELCO officials held an informational public meeting Monday at the Newport Municipal building. The meeting included a VELCO team, but few others showed up. Members of the Jay Planning Commission, Developer Tony Tanguay, and members of the press attended to hear about plans and ask questions.

Lowell Student Receives Financial Literacy Award

LOWELL - Ten elementary school students were congratulated on winning a $250 college savings account through the Reading is an Investment Program. The program is now in its second year and was used this school term by 124 Vermont elementary schools.
Last year, 108 schools participated. The program promotes both financial literacy and reading literacy through classroom and library instruction and through a personal reading program.

DERBY/ HOLLAND - The Vermont Public Service Board (PSB) granted intervener status on a permissive basis to two parties who want to participate in the process and hearings for the proposed controversial Derby Line Wind Project. The Holland and Derby Citizens Group for Responsible Energy (HDCRE) and Derby Line resident Mary Jenne were granted the status this week. Both were originally denied as they had missed the deadline to file, however the denial came without prejudice.

To Ty, with love from the heart

NEWPORT CITY – A couple hundred North Country Union High School students, many wearing pink, gathered in the gymnasium yesterday to show they have a heart as big as the gym.
Each student paid at least a dollar to join their fellow classmates and form a heart. The money will benefit Ty Robertson, the son of Melissa Jenkins of St. Johnsbury who was murdered in March.
Together, the students raised $550.18, well over the goal of $200.

Former Trooper Sentenced for Sexual Exploitation of a Minor

NEWPORT – Former Vermont State Trooper Mark Beezup, 54, was sentenced in Orleans Superior Court Criminal Division last week for sexually exploiting a minor.
He was sentenced by Judge Robert Bent to 9 to 12 months, all suspended but 90 days. He will serve 30 days in jail on weekends and then 60 days on home confinement. Beezup will be on probation under standard and special conditions. The sentence began May 4.
Beezup must attend sex offender treatment, register as a sex offender, and he must not seek certification as a law enforcement officer, according to the conditions.

Three Arraigned for Having a Bomb

NEWPORT CITY – Three Northeast Kingdom men were in court yesterday, charged with making and possessing a pipe bomb.
Cody Macfarlane, 23, of Newport; Nathaniel Chaffee, 24, of Newport; and John Glover, 24, of Barton all entered not guilty pleas in Orleans County Court. Judge Robert Bent held Chaffee and Glover on $5,000 bail and Macfarlane on $7,500.

Rev. Mary-Marguerite Kohn Is Victim of Fatal Shooting

ELLICOTT CITY, MD - The Rev. Mary-Marguerite Kohn, who has often served the St. Mark's Episcopal Church community in Newport, was the victim of a fatal shooting in Ellicott City near Baltimore, MD, May 3.
The shooting occurred at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Brenda Brewington, 59, of Ellicott City, the church's administrative assistant, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rev. Kohn, 62, of Arbutus, was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she died Saturday night.

Missing Essex Couple Sought in Coventry Landfill

COVENTRY - State and federal authorities along with the Essex Police Department are searching the New England Waste Services of Vermont (NEWSVT) Landfill in Coventry today for the bodies of two missing Essex, VT residents.
According to a press release issued by the U.S. Department of Justice in Burlington, the search is connected to the investigation into the disappearance of William and Lorraine Currier. The Curriers have been missing since June 8, 2011.
Today's search is an extension of a search conducted April 12 and 13 on Route 15 in Essex.
