August 15, 2012

NEWPORT - The Lowell Six - protesters charged with trespassing on Lowell Mountain where Green Mountain Power is building a wind turbine farm - were found guilty by jury at 8 PM last night. The state has asked for a restitution hearing and no sentence has been handed down.
The jury trial was held before a packed house made up mostly of supporters and opponents of industrial wind development, media personnel and protesters who were arrested at the same location this month. The protesters held a rally outside the courthouse where they beat drums and symbols.

Library Pranksters Strike – Again!

August 15, 2012

BARTON/GLOVER - Surprise!
The children's librarian and a volunteer were stunned Tuesday morning when they walked through the door of the Barton Public Library.
Someone had been busy stacking chairs, ladders, and tables – on top of each other – almost to the ceiling. Even the potted tree made it to the top of a shelf.
Included among the items moved was an antique victrola, which weighed so much, according to Library Director Toni Eubanks, that she knew a single perpetrator could not have done the job.
"It took two firefighters to retrieve the victrola," she said Wednesday.

DUNN’S LEGACY

August 13, 2012

DERBY - The Michael Dunn legacy is fully coming to life.
Dunn passed away unexpectedly in 2007 and surprised everyone with his bequest: a generous public gift to both Vermont and Canada.
Dunn owned more than 800 acres around Lake Memphremagog, with approximately 400 acres on each side of the border. He left the land to both governments if they decided to accept the gift, which both did.
Friday, a public celebration and dedication of the Eagle Point Wildlife Management Area at Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge was held on the Dunn property.

Lowell Assistant Fire Chief Calvin Allen identified the hiker only as Alfonso from the Montreal area. Allen didn’t know Alfonso’s last name and personnel from Missisquoi Valley Ambulance Service said they are not allowed to give the name.
The hiker sustained an ankle injury around 5 p.m. Friday and spent the night in his tent.

Boaters Endure Three Hour Wait in the Hot Sun

August 12, 2012

NEWPORT - Several people are upset about having to wait one to three hours to check in with U.S. Customs at the Newport City dock over the August 4th weekend.
Those traveling in to the United States on Lake Memphremagog must go through inspection first. The city dock is a port of entry and those checking in do so by a phone that sits on an outside wall at the dock. American citizens and Canadians wanting to come into Newport had to wait in line near the phone for a U.S. Customs agent to check them in.
State Senator Vincent Illuzzi called the long wait “unacceptable.”

Sparks Threaten Gas Pumps

August 12, 2012

NEWPORT CITY — Newport City Firefighters responded to the One Stop Mini-Mart about 1:30 Saturday morning.
An unidentified clerk called the fire department after seeing fire in the canopy over the gas tanks. Upon arrival, firefighters saw no fire. After speaking with the clerk, firefighters learned an electrical issue in a ballast in the canopy had caused the problem.
Fire Chief Jamie Leclair said the clerk, prior to firefighters arrival, cut the power to the lights and gas pumps.
The ballast was disconnected and store owner Jamie Roy restored power to the pumps and station.
