Occupy Marks Three Month Anniversary

NEWPORT – A cold wind coming off Lake Memphremagog whipped through a pup tent at the Emory Hebard State Office Building on Saturday.
Meanwhile, a group of demonstrators held signs and banged on drums as motorists passed by the busy intersection of Main and Coventry streets.
This Saturday marked the three-month anniversary of the founding of Occupy Wall Street in New York City. Demonstrations, marches and parties are being held around the country by members of the Occupy movement.

Newport City Elementary School's 2011 Holiday Concert

NEWPORT – People gathered around the Newport City Elementary School gymnasium last Thursday night to listen to the fourth, fifth, and sixth graders play and sing Christmas songs.
The Beginning Band, which included fourth graders, started off the concert by playing "Hot Cross Buns/Merrily We Roll Along." They then played three more songs including "Jingle Bells," which they played along with the Advanced Band (fifth and sixth graders) to end their program.
Next was the Advanced Band playing songs like "B B Rock," "Deck The Halls," "Our Director March," and finally "Christmas Chimes."

Changes Come to LaPierre

NEWPORT CITY – Lapierre’s Decorating Center on East Main Street continues to grow, giving one more reason to shop local all year round.
“We’re rearranging all the time,” said manager Meghan Davis. “We’re always bringing in new products in the flooring and paint department. Now we decided to bring in home decor and gifts.”
“We added home decor give people additional reasons to stop in,” said Randy Davis who co-owns the store with his wife Valerie. “We like to have a nice variety and things you don’t see everywhere.”

START Aims to Stop Teen Crashes

NEWPORT CITY – “If you don’t think it can happen to you, you’ve already made your first mistake.”
Those words are at the end of a video the Stop Teen Alcohol Risk Team (START) brought to the North Country Union High School Driver Education Class this week. START consists of local and state law enforcement agencies and the court diversion program.
The video showed newspaper clippings and graphic still photographs of a fatal drinking and driving accident nearly 10 years ago. The accident happened after two local friends had been drinking.

Lowell Mountain Protesters Prepare for Court

NEWPORT, VT - The protesters who were arrested on Lowell Mountain Dec. 5 are due in court Tuesday, Dec. 20, for arraignment at 8:30 AM. The protesters are calling for supporters to meet in front of the courthouse at 7:50 Tuesday morning to show support.
Protesters are urging others on their blog, Mountain Talk on World Press, to bring signs and plan on singing the Vermont song, “These Green Mountains.”

A North Country Tradation

NEWPORT - A standing tradition continued on at North Country Union High School Wednesday evening.
That tradition was inviting graduates of North Country and Sacred Heart Schools to join the current students in the performance Hellelujah from Messiah.
Earlier in the evening the Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of William Prue, performed pieces like I Saw Her Standing There. Later on the Concert Band performed tunes like Jingle Bells March.

Rotarian of the Year

NEWPORT, VT - Newport Rotary Club President Doug Spates presents the Rotarian of the Year Award to Janet Cartee of Newport City.
Cartee received the award for her outstanding years of dedication to the club.
Spates presented the award during the club's Christmas party at the Eastside Restaurant Tuesday evening.

DERBY LINE - The Border Livestock Plus 4-H Club made their way around Derby Line Sunday knocking on doors and surprising residents with Christmas Carols.
The day was planned as part of the club's community work service goal.

NEWPORT CITY - Robert Morse, 38, of Hutchinson, KS, pleaded guilty Dec. 1 to possessing a trailer stolen from NEVTEC on the Airport Road. Because Morse is out of state, he entered his plea by waiver and did not appear in court. He was sentenced to pay a $300 fine and $186 in surcharges.
July 6, 2010, Leonard Griffes, owner of NEVTEC, told police that someone had taken his trailer the day before. Griffes said he had waited to report the trailer missing because he wanted to make sure nobody else in his company had it.
