Legislature Takes Up GMO Labeling Debate

February 17, 2014

A hot topic of debate in Montpelier right now, like in many other parts of the U.S., is whether or not to require food manufacturers to label foods from GMOs (genetically modified organisms). The bill Vermont is considering, H.112, sponsored by about 50 legislators, would require food labels identifying GMOs.

Albany Rep. Strong Writes Right To Work Bill

MONTPELIER - We’ve heard it many times, “Freedom Isn’t Free.” Rep. Vicki Strong (R-Orleans-Caledonia-1) of Albany knows that very well. Her son, Jesse Strong, died in a 2005 roadside attack in Afghanistan, a week before that country’s election.
Strong is so passionate about freedom, she wrote a bill that proposes that employees have the opportunity to decide for themselves if they want to join or financially support a union.

Anglers From All Over New England In NEK Fishing Derby

DERBY - As the Elks Club in Derby got more and more packed with fisherman, their catches, friends, outdoorsman and locals looking for a great meal, event organizer Ron Wright looked over the throng.
“You know we’ve come a long way since our first year. This is out tenth now and it’s at the point where we are getting fisherman from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York and of course a great group from Vermont.”

Island Pond Winter Carnival: All Aboard The Snow Bus

This retro themed VW bus snow sculpture created by the Twelve Tribes Community - who own and operate the Yellow Deli, Common Sense Bakery, and Simon the Tanner in Island Pond - was both an interactive and organic artistic piece. People could go inside and pose for a photo like these kids. The wheels, hubcaps and license plate were real, and inside there was even a floor mat and a dashboard. There was music playing on the radio too. The yellow coloring on top was made from turmeric spice, and the bottom was colored using a mixture of carob powder and coffee.

School Bus Thief Changes Plea To Guilty

NEWPORT CITY - Adam Page, the 23-year-old man who stole a school bus and later wrecked it pled guilty to his crimes in the Criminal Division of Orleans Superior Court Thursday.

State Goes After Auction Houses For Back Sales Taxes

DERBY - A clarification in state tax regulations five years ago has led to auctioneers being clawed for back sales taxes charges. A decision in 2009 by the Vermont Department of Taxes has left some auction houses scrambling to learn how the regulations, which were codified in 2011 and 2012, affect them.

Young Local Music Students Impress At Concert

Although it may seem difficult to take a wooden object in one hand and an item with strings in other and make beautiful sounds, it is possible, and with some practice and guidance from highly skilled teachers, results can come quickly.
Kathy and Glee Charlestream, founders of Charlestream School of Music, travel to Newport from Cabot every week to meet with their students in the local area.
