A Fire Truck For Coventry?

NEWPORT CITY - Anyone passing by the fire station Sunday afternoon would have seen a fire truck parked outside with the words "Coventry Vol. Fire CO," written on the sides.

Village Will Appeal Water Case Decision

DERBY - The Village of Derby Center is appealing Judge Howard VanBenthuysen decision in a recent law suit. The Village of Derby Center billed Newport for water that was allocated or reserved for the city, not the actual amount used. The matter went before the courts and the judge ruled in favor of Newport. The city said that being billed for the allocation was in violation of the 1997 contract with the village. The village Clerk Betsy Bumps said that VanBenthuysen’s decision was “not proper,” and that his decision was contrary to a different judge’s decision on the same issue.

LOVE AND MURDER

July 29, 2013

NEWPORT – Carlton Bickford, 76, of Glover, entered a not guilty plea to first degree murder in the shooting death of his friend Rachel Coburn, 72, of Barton. He was ordered held without bail. Bickford, head bowed, left the crowded courtroom with the despondent air of a man who had already been sentenced.

MURDER IN BARTON

July 28, 2013

BARTON - A 76-year-old Glover man will be in Orleans County Criminal Court today to answer a charge of first degree murder. Friday afternoon, Carlton Bickford went to the Lyndonville Police Department to report that he had shot and killed a woman. Lyndonville Police contacted the state police, who responded and questioned Bickford. They then went to the home of Rachel Coburn, 72, of West Street in Barton, where they found Coburn's body inside the home.

NEWPORT CITY – Anyone near South Bay Thursday would have seen several police boats with a helicopter hovering overhead. The crew from Haverfield Aviation, located in Gettysburg, PA, was working on installing a mechanism to prevent power outages on two utility lines between South Bay and the Glen Road.

DERBY LINE/ STANSTEAD, QUE. – Working with 35 cast members including a group of children and a dog to create a live show to entertain hundreds may seem like an enormous and stressful task, but not for Phil Gosselin, a new director with QNEK. Gosselin works methodically and remains cool, clam, and relaxed no matter what surprises come his way. Gosselin is directing "Annie, The Musical," which premieres tonight at the famous Haskell Opera House in Derby Line, VT, and Stanstead, Quebec.
