State Goes After Auction Houses For Back Sales Taxes

DERBY - A clarification in state tax regulations five years ago has led to auctioneers being clawed for back sales taxes charges. A decision in 2009 by the Vermont Department of Taxes has left some auction houses scrambling to learn how the regulations, which were codified in 2011 and 2012, affect them.

Young Local Music Students Impress At Concert

Woodard Withdraws Guilty Plea

NEWPORT CITY - Nicholas Woodard, 23, who pleaded guilty to three counts of a prohibited act and lewd and lascivious conduct with an adult on July 18, withdrew his plea during a sentencing hearing in Orleans District Court Wednesday morning.

Jay Peak: No Permit For Rec Center Yet

The Town of Jay sent resort officials from Jay Peak back to the drawing board Monday evening following a public hearing. Jay planners are concerned about what they consider a lack of parking spaces available at the proposed indoor recreation center the resort wants to build. Planners also want visual impact addressed.

Exploiting Vulnerable Adult Nets Deferred Sentence

NEWPORT CITY – A 53-year-old Lyndonville woman who changed her plea to guilty Tuesday to a felony charge of financially exploiting a vulnerable adult was handed a two-year sentence that will be deferred.

Nordic Skating Trail To Remain Open

NEWPORT – Kingdom Games spearheaded an effort to create a Nordic ice skating trail on Lake Memphremagog for Winter Fest and because it was such a huge success, the trail will be maintained and remain open through the month of February.
