NEWPORT CITY - Deadly diseases have made many children from Uganda, a landlocked country in East Africa, orphans. Even though the children are orphans doesn't mean they don't deserve a quality education and that is exactly what Herman Lukwago of Uganda aims to do.

Scout Food Drive A Success!

November 2, Cub Scout Pack 830 and Girl Scout Troop 30100 was out in force on this wet rainy day, but that didn't stop these kids from walking with pride going door to door in Derby, Derby Line, and Newport. These kids asked community members to help them support the local food shelf for Hungerfest 2013.

Hunt of a Lifetime

Essex County––  Of all the moose hunting stories to come out of the Island Pond check in station since the first State of Vermont moose hunt in 1993, one hunter and her story was particularly interesting this year. For thirteen year old Emily Schneider from St. Mary’s, Pennsylvania who bagged her big bull moose, it was literally the “hunt of a lifetime.”

Fire Not Suspicious

DERBY LINE – A house that burned to the ground quickly Tuesday evening is not considered suspicious according to police. An old home at the top of Pelow Hill in Derby Line had sat empty for years and was recently purchased by Dale Bennett of Coventry. The home remained unoccupied after the sale but was undergoing renovations. Fire Investigator Paul Cerutti and Detective Sargent Mark Potter with the Vermont State Police among others investigated and determined the cause of the fire was electrical.

COY Collecting Pull Tabs

In an effort to help deserving children, members from the Cars of Yesteryear (COY), are collecting tabs from aluminum cans.
COY will send the tabs to the Shriners in Springfield, MA who in turn will recycle the aluminum for cash. Shriners use the proceeds to benefit children's needs in their hospitals across the country.

DEW to Build Jay Peak Stateside Base Projects in 2014

Jay, VT - Jay Peak Resort has hired DEW Construction Corp. to manage and construct three new projects to be located near their Stateside Base – a Recreation Center, 84 residential cottage units, and the first phase of the Snowline Medical Center.

House Fire Under Investigation

October 30, 2013

DERBY LINE – A house in Derby Line caught fire and went up quickly Tuesday evening. The fire is under investigation to identify the point of origin and cause. Firefighters stood guard all night long watching the property because it periodically had bursts of flames. They also needed to secure the scene while waiting for investigators to arrive. The property was unstable and collapsing in places.

Lowell Wind: Sound issues continue

October 29, 2013

LOWELL – Neighbors of the Lowell Wind project Shirley and Don Nelson want continuous sound monitoring to measure the noise coming from the facility. The Nelsons have complained of noise from the site, and have been compiling a list of effects in a journal. On about two occasions last year noise levels went slightly above the sound limits set by the Vermont Public Service Board (PSB). According to PSB information, the levels above the limits were so low it was beyond human detection.

Drug Take Back Program Nets 149 Pounds

DERBY- The Drug Enforcement Agency endorses a drug take back program that is operated locally by the Orleans Country Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Kirk Martin said the biannual program is a national effort to get unused drugs out of people's homes. “We want to get narcotics out of the house,” said Martin. “There needs to be appropriate disposal of unused drugs to keep them from contaminating ground water. The high rate of misuse of narcotics, outdated drugs, and people who pass away are several reasons why we have this program.”
