Roof Top Gunman Competent

October 16, 2013

NEWPORT CITY - The Newport man who stood on his roof with a gun, while an army of law enforcement officers cleared the neighborhood and worked to bring him down was found competent to stand trial. Derick Niles, 36, of Newport City was returned to the Northern State Correctional Facility Tuesday for a lack of $100,000 bail.
A report given to the court stated that Niles is competent. Neither State's Attorney Alan Franklin nor public defender Janssen Willhoit argued with the report.

Roger Pion: Ready for Trial

NEWPORT CITY - Roger Pion, 35, of Newport was found competent to stand trial.
That was the word in Orleans County Court Tuesday after it received a Sept. 19 competency report. The content of the report is not public record and therefore not available to the press.
Pion is accused of driving over several Orleans County Sheriff Department cruisers with a farm tractor before leading police on a pursuit from the sheriff's office, to Causeway in Newport Newport City.

Cancer Patient - Soon to Be Survivor Speaks Out

LOWELL - Thirty-four-year-old Colleen Cole believes women as young as 20 should have a mammogram.  
Cole found a growth in her breast while doing a self-check this past summer. Doctors diagnosed her with Stage II Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Aug 12. 
"I was quite shocked," said Cole. "I don't have a history in my family."

Brunswick National Wildlife Refuge Closed

Essex County–– Though the smaller sign affixed to the larger roadsign marking the Silvio O. Conte National Wildlife Refuge Center in Brunswick indicated the center was open daily, tourists and others who drove onto the property were soon aware that the gridlock in Washington has had a ripple effect here in the Northeast Kingdom.

Skate Park Is Now Open

Saturday, there was a grand opening for the new skate park in Gardner Park in Newport. In attendance for the grand opening were from left to right: Kathy Metras of NEKCA, Andy Cappello of Newport Parks & Recreation, Ira Morgan of Hellbilly Hideaway, and Michael Parker of Parker Construction.

Morgan Residents Consider Turning Points

MORGAN- Forty residents in Morgan attended a public meeting for a presentation to consider whether to lease or sell the elementary school to Turning Points Alternative Education Program (AEP). Dwindling enrollment forced the town to tuition the students to Derby Elementary School last year. The school sits idle and residents are seeking different options to make use of the facility.

Mammograms Saves Lives

So it seems there is some confusion about at what age you need to start getting mammograms. Every major medical organization with expertise in breast cancer now recommends that women start getting annual mammograms at age 40. Yet, millions of women remain confused about when to be screened. Many forego annual mammograms and increase their risk of dying unnecessarily from breast cancer.

An Early Start

BARTON-The Business and Operations Committee at Lake Region Union High School is off to a fast start cobbling together a budget for fiscal year 2014/15. Committee Chair Mike Sanville said the first draft proposes an increase of $90,000 over the current fiscal year's budget of $6.5 million. “That represents an increase of 1.9%,” said Sanville. “Add in the capital reserve of $100,000 and the overall increase is 3.35%.”

Talk of Marijuana Dispensary

NEWPORT CITY - Lawmakers, during the 2011-2012 legislative session, decided to allow medical marijuana dispensaries in the state. Now Newport City officials are trying to decide if they want the dispensaries in their communities. 
Tuesday, the planning commission, at the request of the Newport City Council, talked to Newport City Police Chief Seth DiSanto about if the city should disallow dispensaries in the city.
