MAPLE PRODUCER EYES BRIGHTON

September 26, 2013

BRIGHTON – Island Pond may be home to a new maple sap processing business.
The Brighton Development Review Board unanimously approved a permit for a maple business.
Business officials from Bernard’s Maple of Saint-Victor, Quebec, are working on ironing out the details with the town before getting to the final decision.

NEWPORT CITY - Police evacuated a normally quiet neighborhood for over four hours Wednesday morning while they dealt with an alleged gunman.
Later in the day, the suspect, identified as Derick Niles, 36, entered not guilty pleas to reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. Judge Howard VanBenthuysen held Niles on $100,000 bail and ordered an in-patient evaluation for competency and sanity. Niles wasn't happy with VanBenthuysen's ruling.
"I can't believe that you're defending meth and getting hits taken out on people," said Niles in court. "I won't sell meth for them."

GMP BECOMES ISO FRIENDLY

LOWELL - Green Mountain Power (GMP) is making improvements to find ways to deal with the curtailment by the regional transmission operator ISO New England.
In its first year of operation, GMP was not allowed by ISO NE to work at its full potential at certain times (curtailment). GMP announced Friday that a completion of a transmission line upgrade has been allowed for an increase in generation at the Kingdom Community Wind facility in Lowell.

MAPLEFIELDS PERMIT CHALLENGED

NEWPORT CITY – Did members of the Development Review Board expose themselves and the city to a possible lawsuit when they issued a conditional permit to construct a convince store, restaurant, and gas station on the corner of Main Street and Third Street?
The city council will address that at its meeting Monday, Oct. 7.
The permit includes razing the Newport One Stop, a neighboring office and a residential building. The board issued the conditional permit during a public hearing earlier this month.

MANHUNT IN NEWPORT - SUSPECT IN CUSTODY

September 25, 2013

NEWPORT, VT – Police from numerous agencies surrounded an area on the west side of Newport City in response to reports of an armed gunman who may have held members of his family hostage. A standoff, which began before 6 a.m., ended around 11:30 when the suspect was taken into custody.
A witness contacted the newspaper to report that a gunman had been seen in the woods near Highland Avenue. All residents in the Highland Avenue area, including West Main and Pleasant Street, have been asked to evacuate.

A NEED FOR NEEDLESS THINGS

BARTON – Dave McCausland and Sue Stenta, owners of Needless Things Vermont, are pickers with a good cause. While they do operate a for profit company, much of the focus is to sort out items that can be donated to people in need.
“We collect unwanted items all over Vermont, even down south,” said McCausland. “People call and we'll pick it up. Most of the material we collect is in the area.”

NEWPORT CENTER – Phyllis Joy Hammond is an artist and a naturalist, and it's her love of nature that dominates her many sketches and paintings, including those in her books "Traveling with Wildflowers from Newfoundland to Alaska" and "Through the Eyes of the Children - Traveling with the Artist."
In her latest work, "Through the Eyes of the Children," Phyllis marries her sketches of mountains, rivers and plains to the poetry and prose of local elementary school students from Coventry, Holland, Newport Center, Newport City, and Troy.

TIMES ARE A CHANGIN' – COMING UP WITH A NEW ED PLAN

BARTON – In 1997, the Legislature passed a new education funding mechanism, Act 60, which ensures, “All Vermont children will be afforded educational opportunities that are substantially equal in quality.” Act 60 also includes the School Quality Standards (SQS), which governed class size, required programs, hours needed to complete an accredited program, and other criteria.

FEEDING THE HUNGRY

DERBY – Ronney Lyster, owner of Northpoint Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and the Auto Saver Group, kicked off the 2013 Hungerfest Friday by donating $10,000 to Northeast Kingdom Community Action (NEKCA).
Proceeds will benefit NEKCA's Hungerfest, a food drive for the local food shelf. Other businesses such as Fred's Plumbing and Heating donated to NEKCA as well. NEKCA is planning a variety show at the Haskell Opera House Saturday, Oct. 19 to raise money. As of Friday, committee members had lined up Mark Shelton, Tony O'Connor, Tod Pronto, Deveney Choquette, and Wayne Warner.

AIR SHOW OPENS WINGS

COVENTRY – Things will by flying at the Newport State Airport this weekend as Dan Gauvin, owner of Lake View Aviation, presents a mini air show in conjunction of the Parker Pie Wings Restaurant grand opening. Dan Marcotte and Hugh Shickle will perform aerobatic tricks in the mid-afternoon to celebrate the opening of the restaurant.
