Rangers Defeat O's in Season Opener

LYNDON–Haley Kennedy and Emma English combined for 6 hits in their Babe Ruth fastpitch softball debuts, as Lake Region held off the Lyndon Orioles Wednesday evening, 8-6.
The Rangers opened their Babe Ruth season (for ages 13-16) with 13 hits to back the strong pitching performance of Michelle Thibeault (six hits allowed, seven strikeouts).
Kennedy led off the game with the first of her four hits on the night, and later came in to score on a Chelsey Thibeault ground out to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.

Lake Region 1 Tops NC Athletics

NEWPORT–The North Country 2 Babe Ruth team, known as the Athletics, hosted their first home game of the season on Tuesday evening after their previous meetings were either canceled or postponed due to various reasons.
The still unnamed Lake Region One team paid a visit the to the North Country Union High School baseball field to challenge the Athletics under favorable weather conditions.
The visiting team would walk away with the 9-3 win, with Alex Beauregard picking up the win while going two for three at the plate.

Rock Crushers Hold First Try-out

JAY–The Green Mountain Rock Crushers held their first player try-out camp this past weekend at the Ice House at Jay Peak. Twenty-two players made the trip to northeastern Vermont to try to win a roster spot, and while not all of them were offered an invitation to the come back, they enjoyed their experience.
"It's absolutely beautiful up here, it's so scenic," said Jonathan Reynolds, a twenty-four year old goaltender from Toronto.
GM and Governor Andy Makal was pleased with the camp and the level of play the athletes brought with them.

Falcons in Top 25 at New England's

BURLINGTON–The North Country 4x100 team, Colton White, and Haley-jo Tetreault all placed within the top twenty-five in their respective events on Saturday at the New England Championships.
The 4x100 team (Dylan Colombia, Nick LeClair, Josh Brien, and Brian DeLabruere) came in 14th. Tetreault came in 23rd in the 1600M. White was 21st in the Javelin, and Colombia also participated in the 100M, where he finished 19th.

North Country Girls Finish 7th at States

The North Country Girls Golf Team competed in the Vermont State, Division I Championships on Tuesday, at the Proctor Pittsford Country Club. With a combined score of 230, they tied for seventh in the ten team tournament. Eilish Muir improved her score over last year by 35%. Shooting a respectable 123, she had her best hole on the 7th,a par 3. “I used my 5 iron to put the ball four feet from the pin, just missed the birdie putt. But, I wasn’t short, and made the easy putt back for my par. Unfortunately, it was my only par.”

Morin Medals at Division II Championships

MIDDLEBURY–Lake Region's Matt Morin and Mount Mansfield's Jona Scott were paired up for play on Wednesday for the Division II boys state championship in Middlebury.
The two went back and forth all day long, but Morin emerged victorious over Scott, shooting a six over par 77 to Scott's 81.
"It was pretty back and forth with Jona," said Morin the day after his big win, "The course played really tough, the weather conditions were really good, although it got a little windy towards the end. I was pretty happy with the way I played."

NCU Tennis Finishes at 4-9

The North Country Boys Tennis Team finished off their season with a "win some, lose some" scenario in their final two matches, picking up the win against Spaulding and the loss against Stowe.
Against Spaulding, the only loss came via the forfeit in the number two doubles position. Dave Durivage went over Matt Avery 6-4, 7-5. His brother Thomas won a little more convincingly with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Will Gurin.
Steve Raboin (6-1, 6-1) and Fred Petzoldt (6-2, 6-2) also had strong showings as did Travers Parsons-Grayson (6-4, 6-1).

Gallup Wins Sportsmanship Award

BOSTON–Danika Gallup , a senior at Lake Region Union High School, has just been awarded $5,000 as part of the Hood Good Sport Scholarship Program. For the second year in a row, HP Hood has awarded $5,000 scholarships to varsity athletes who demonstrate good sportsmanship on and off the field, as well as excel in academics and is an involved community member.
Out of the over 2,400 submissions received, 3 winners were selected out of 10 finalists in each New England state. Gallup was 1 out of 3 chosen for the scholarship in Vermont. She will be attending Saint Michael's College in the fall.

Falcon Girls Wrap up Season

ST.ALBANS–Strong and gusty northwest winds, fifty degree temperatures, and light showers, perfect weather for the final girl’s golf match of the season. This was a make-up, weather postponed the first date. Weather worse than this?
26 girls from 8 high schools braved the conditions to compete in the Champlain Invitational, including a record 9 golfers from South Burlington. Essex won the event with a score of 98. BFA edged Burlington115 to 117 for second. MVU finished fifth with a 125, followed by North Country.
