JERICHO/NEWPORT–The 2012 North Country girls tennis team got their season underway last week against Mount Mansfield.
While it was partly sunny with seasonable temperatures here in Newport, it was miserable in Jericho.
From the moment the team arrived at the courts rain poured down upon the players, forcing them to deal with the miserable conditions until the matches were eventually suspended.
FAIRFAX–The Lake Region Lady Rangers opened their 2012 softball season much like they did in 2011. With snow still twirling around the air and temperatures straddling the 40-degree mark, the Rangers could not overcome first-game jitters, falling to perennial powerhouse Fairfax, 8-3.
Fairfax got things rolling in the first inning, pushing across four runs (three of which were unearned), as Lake Region generously assisted their hosts with four errors.
ORLEANS – “The goal for the season is to compete, be productive and have an athlete compete in every event.” Those were the words of Coach Auclair during a preseason workout.
This season’s squad will be larger than usual, with 20 girls and 16 boys making up the 36 member team. 10 freshmen have also made the jump to the track and field team.
