NEWPORTâThe 2012 North Country softball team is a mixture of veterans and new faces with the numbers skewing towards the new faces.
"There are some vets, an awful lot of rookies, but it is early and we are looking to get some things together," said head coach Leslie Dunn.
Returning this year are seniors Hillary Manning, Samantha Collins, Brandi Thornton, Anna Ghelli, Emily Corkins and Kayla Desheneau as well as juniors Mariah Roberts and Anna Bingham.
Pitching is one area where the Falcons have some depth, and Dunn is excited to have reliable arms ready to go.

After three scoreless innings, St.Johnsbury got to Falcons starting pitcher Joel Lemarche in the fourth, putting up six runs in the inning.
The Hilltoppers added a run in the fifth, making it 7-0 before the Falcons were able to break up the Academy's Lincoln Lemieux's bid for a no hitter.

BARREâThe Derby Kings basketball team, comprised of mainly 6th and 7th graders, with four 8th graders as well, went 2-0 at the One Day Run Tournament this past Saturday.
The boys competed in the "A" level 8th grade division, and had little difficulty holding their two opponents to an average of just thirty points per game.
The Kings, using a combination of height, speed and quickness to double up their opposition, scoring close to sixty points per game.
Kendrick Gray, Colin Myrick and Trey Azur were the top scorers on the team, but Derby got contributions from everyone on the roster.

NEWPORTâWhen looking at the 2012 North Country track and field season, the biggest star of the program will not be competing in any of the events.
It will be hosting them.
The brand new facility on the campus of North Country Union High cost over $180,000.00 to build, and everyone I spoke with could not be more thankful to the members of the community that helped make this dream come true.
ORLEANSâ âSenior leadership and senior contribution,â are what coach Laura Laramee says will be the key to Lake Regionâs run during the 2012 Tennis season. âWe are a very senior heavy team and I am looking for those girls to carry the load,â she would go on to add.
While tennis may not be as popular as the Big 3 of Soccer, Basketball, and Baseball, the blue and white still have 12 girls willing to test their skill on the blacktop.

JERICHO/NEWPORTâThe 2012 North Country girls tennis team got their season underway last week against Mount Mansfield.
While it was partly sunny with seasonable temperatures here in Newport, it was miserable in Jericho.
From the moment the team arrived at the courts rain poured down upon the players, forcing them to deal with the miserable conditions until the matches were eventually suspended.
FAIRFAXâThe Lake Region Lady Rangers opened their 2012 softball season much like they did in 2011. With snow still twirling around the air and temperatures straddling the 40-degree mark, the Rangers could not overcome first-game jitters, falling to perennial powerhouse Fairfax, 8-3.
Fairfax got things rolling in the first inning, pushing across four runs (three of which were unearned), as Lake Region generously assisted their hosts with four errors.
