Lake Region Golf in Mid-Season Form

May 16, 2012

Lake Region’s boys’ golf team is playing quite well these days. Matt Morin picked up where he left off last year and was the Medalist in his last two meets. The first at the Country Club of Vermont where he shot a 39 and again Monday at the Orleans Country Club where he put up his lowest round of the season, a 33.
The team also got some reinforcements as they welcomed back Devin Morley during Monday’s meet after he missed some time with a hand injury. In his first meet back he shot a respectable 46 for the Rangers.
Carl Oberg also shot his low round of the season on Monday with a 41.

Lemarche Pitches Eight Inning Gem in Falcons’ 6-4 Loss to CVU

May 15, 2012

NEWPORT–When a team is mired in a one win season they need someone or something to rally around.
For the North Country baseball team, that someone is pitcher Joel Lemarche.
Nicknamed "Sheldon" for his resemblance to the character played by Emmy award winning actor Jim Parsons on CBS' The Big Bang Theory, Lemarche came out and threw a masterful eight inning game for a shorthanded Falcon team on Monday against Champlain Valley.
Even though North Country lost the game 6-4 Lemarche's performance was topic of conversation after the game.
"It was a heck of a job," mused Tyler Sanville.

Falcon Girls’ Take Two From U-32 in Monday’s Doubleheader

May 15, 2012

NEWPORT- The Falcons girls' tennis team played a doubleheader against U-32 on Monday, as part of a make-up from an early season cancellation.
Playing under "Pro-style" rules to speed up the game, the Falcons won the first match 5-2 and then finished off the Raiders 4-3 in the second.
"These matches were really important to us," said coach Marie George. "The victories gave us wins number three and four on the season, and we really needed them."
In singles play, Erin Connor defeated Rhiannon Rosamillia 8-4 for the Raiders’ only singles win as the rest of the Falcons all won their matches.

North Country Explodes for Sixteen Runs against Redhawks

May 15, 2012

NEWPORT–This one was not even close.
The Falcons scored sixteen runs on fourteen hits, six walks, two hit-by-ptches and eight wild pitches, defeating CVU 16-0.
"This was a big win. I feel it got our confidence up. Getting hits and laying down the bunts when I asked them to was key," said coach Leslie Dunn. "Defensively we didn't make any mistakes and we looked really good."
North Country got off to an interesting start, as Maddie Mosher scored the game's first run without the benefit of a hit.

31 girls competed in the 18 hole tournament with 11 school sending players. On a day that had rain and possible thunderstorms predicted, it turned out to be a fantastic day for golf. Teeing off at noon, the tournament was completed in 4 1/2 hours, a good pace.  Team scores are determined by the best total of two players (details below).

Lake Region Loses Nine Inning Affair to Peoples 7-4

May 13, 2012

ORLEANS–The Lake Region softball team rallied in the first to tie the game, the bottom of the sixth, which eventually forced extra innings, the eighth to push the game to the ninth, but in the bottom of the ninth they could not come up with enough runs to force a tenth as they lost a well played game to the Peoples Academy Wolves on Prom Saturday.
"We kept coming back and coming back. Even though we lost, I think it bodes well for us," coach Matt Tinker said after the game.
The Lady Rangers battled all game long, and it started in the first.

North Country Wins Again, Defeat Highlanders and Tigers

May 13, 2012

NEWPORT/MIDDLEBURY–If you looked at all of the records of the spring teams from North Country, the one that stands out is that of the Falcons boys' tennis crew.
The boys have not lost a match in over a month, currently have a 6-1-1 record and are ranked in the top third of all Division I teams.
"The team likens itself to a junk yard dog," said coach Gary Atchinson. "We have no real big shotmakers. We work our points and I would say we are a real lunch pail, blue collar team."
Starting the weekend at 4-1-1, the boys won back-to-back matches on Friday and Saturday to improve their record.

Eagles Win Battle of the Birds 10-4

May 13, 2012

NEWPORT–Two games in two days can be tough for any athlete, but for a softball pitcher that has to go out and throw back-to-back complete games, it is down right brutal.
That is what Kayla Descheneau had to do this past Thursday and Friday when she took the circle for the Falcons against Colchester and Mount Abe.
With freshman pitcher Taylor Blake unavailable due to a concussion, coach Leslie Dunn had limited options.
