Mt. Abraham Rallies to Defeat Lady Rangers 2-1

ORLEANS–Meghan Livingston broke a 1-1 tie with 11:37 remaining in the second half to lift the twelfth ranked Mount Abraham Eagles (10-4-2) over the number four seed Lake Region during the Division II quarter-finals on Saturday afternoon.
The goal came after a solid seventeen minutes of sustained Eagle pressure in the Ranger end of the field.
"The girls gave an awesome effort out their," said Eric Degre. "Unfortunately in the second, they got a bunch of shots in a row and eventually scored."
As the action unfurled in the first half, both teams looked fairly equal.

Buckles Breaks Two Records in Final Game of 2012

NEWPORT–Jacob Buckles broke two school records on Friday night as the Falcons fell to Milton 55-26 to wrap up their regular season.
"Those records... I've been wanting to beat them all year," said Buckles.
"I have been hoping, hoping, hoping to finally beat them and to do it is awesome. I can't describe the feeling."
"I can't say enough good things about Jacob Buckles," said coach Tim Simoneau. "He is going to the North/South game and there is no reason he shouldn't be in the Shrine game, representing North Country."

Falcons Upset Bellows Falls 1-0

BELLOWS FALLS– In the biggest surprise of the weekend, the seventh ranked North Country field hockey team knocked off number two Bellows Falls (11-2) 1-0.
"We called a time out with five minutes left and I told them that we didn't drive all of this way for nothing, that we were not leaving without a win, and we got it," said a joyous coach Chantelle Bouchard.
Brittany Fortier scored with 1:55 left to play in regulation to give her team the win.
The goal came after a dash-mark hit, which Brittany Verge put into the circle.

Eagles Defeat Rangers to Advance to Division II Semi-finals

ORLEANS–Somebody had to win and somebody had to lose in the Lake Region-Mt. Abraham match on Friday afternoon.
No matter what happened, one team was going to leave the field feeling awful.
Sadly for the fans in Ranger Country, it was their much loved, much admired Lake Region boys, as the Eagles (7-7-1) tallied two goals in the final ten minutes of the contest to advance into the Division II semi-finals.
"I thought it was an excellent match," said coach Tom Evans. "It definitely could have gone either way and it happened to go their’s, so hats off to them."

Three Minute Lapse Proves Costly for Falcons Against Tide

BARRE–Spaulding's Julia Ormsby's goal two minutes and nine seconds into the first half was all the eighth seeded Crimson Tided needed as they held on for the remaining seventy-two-plus minutes to defeat North Country 1-0 in the opening round of the Division I play-offs.
"We played hard, but you never get those goals back," said coach Peter Alexander. "We had eight chances to clear or get something done, and you could see it coming.
"But, from that moment on, I thought we competed and had some decent chances, and I am very pleased with the effort."

Dunbar Sisters Strike in Chargers 2-0 Win Over Crusaders

CRAFTSBURY–Sisters Elaine and Sarah Dunbar each had a goal as Craftsbury Academy defeated UCA 2-0 in playdown action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Chargers controlled play in the early going, and their pressure paid off when Sarah Dunbar opened the scoring, sending a rebound past United Christian goaltender Lydia Samaan.
In the second, with the score still 1-0 CA, UCA picked up their game and started to pressure the Chargers.
But the home team did not buckle, instead mounting their own assault on the UCA net.

Lake Region Advances to Division II Quarter-finals

ORLEANS - A brand new coaching staff and an early deficit couldn't stop the Lake Region girls varsity soccer team, who picked up a 2-1 victory over Otter Valley Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the Division II championship tournament.
Senior striker Lauren Nesshoever took advantage of an early lapse in No. 4 Lake Region's defensive unit. Nesshoever pocked a give-and-go 10 minutes into the match to give the No. 13 seeded Otters an early edge.

Rangers Cruise Past Mill River in Opening Round

ORLEANS - With one score and a pair of assists, Lake Region senior Shaquille Urie lifted the Rangers to a 3-0 victory over visiting Miller River in opening round play of the Division II boys soccer tournament Tuesday.
Alex Beauregard pocked the No. 3 seeded Rangers’ (13-2) first goal of the afternoon by converting a well-placed Urie corner kick, followed by a Josh Thibault tally late in the first half and Urie’s goal early in the second half.

West Rutland Edges Crusaders in 1-0 Heartbreaker

NEWPORT–The sight after the game of an exhausted Paul Samaan laying on the ground, inhaler in hand, summed up the effort that the UCA boys gave in their tough-luck 1-0 loss to West Rutland Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the Division IV soccer play-offs.
"The boys gave everything they had today, but you still hate to lose a game like this 1-0," said coach Alyssa DeLaBruere.
UCA matched their opponents step for step, chance for chance, but in the end a squibbler that got past Chris DeLaBruere decided the contest.

Soccer Play-offs Get Underway Tuesday With Boy’s Contests

MONTPELIER–The Vermont Principals Association released their fall play-off schedule on Monday.
Here is a breakdown of who North Country, Lake Region, United Christian Academy and Craftsbury Academy will be playing starting Tuesday.
North Country (15) at CVU (2) Boys Soccer Tuesday at 3:00
The Falcons only saw Champlain Valley once this season, a 3-0 loss on the road.
The game was played on a sloppy JV field and had the unfortunate start time of 10:00 AM.
