NEW LONDON, CT-What started out on high noted ended with two straight defeats, as the OEC Lightning Junior Legion went 1-2 at the War at the Shore baseball tournament this past weekend.
Things got off to a good start as the Lightning opened up play with a 3-2 win. Colin Myrick and Shane Goodell alternated on the bump for the blue and white, and limited the CT Gamers to just two runs.
With the bases loaded and score knotted at 2-2, Ryan O'Donell's walk-off hit was the difference as the Lightning won the contest 3-2.
BARTONâThe baseball diamond in downtown Barton will be the site of the 2013 12-U Vermont State Cal Ripken Championship, starting on Friday July 5th.
Lake Region is the host team and North Country, despite losing in their district final, will also be at the tournament.
The other two teams will come from the Randolph area and Hartford.
Going into play on Friday, Lake Region has to be considered one of the favorites, as they reeled off three wins in a row to win the district tournament up here last weekend.
ORLEANS-The Orleans County Babe Ruth season came to a close on Saturday June 29, 2013 with LR 2 defeating LR 1 13 to 2.
LR 2 ended the season with an 8 game win streak to claim the title.
LR 1 outlasted a determined North Country squad, in a classic double elimination tournament that saw North Country win the first game, but LR 1 battled back to play in the championship game.
All local athletes did a tremendous job in the short season.
The regular season included games with the Lyndon Babe Ruth league, providing our youngsters the opportunity to compete on a larger stage.
BARTON-This past weekend, North Country and Lake Region completed the 12-U District Championship Tournament.
On Thursday, North Country took it to Lake Region, beating them 10-0 in four innings.
This put the pressure on Lake Region to defeat Northfield Saturday, then win back-to-back games over NC to take the title.
Lake Region cruised on Saturday, despite a change in venue to Barton due to the saturated field at Gardner Park and a one hour rain delay.
Solid pitching and timely hitting were the keys to the North Country 10 & Under All-Star teamâs success at the Tournoi National in Drummondville from June 21st -23rd.
NC pitchers Jack Young, Bryce âGunneyâ Gunn, David Lessard and Isaac Bliss combined to allow only five runs in four games to take home the championship banner.
