Shamrocks Find Stiff Competition at Beantown Tourney, UPDATED!

MARLBORO, MA-Competing against some of the top-ranked players in America and Canada, the Vermont Shamrocks went 1-3 in tournament play at the Beantown Classic this past weekend. The weekend opened up with Vermont squaring off against Team Detroit.
In what was described as a well-played, fast-paced game, the Shamrocks got out to an early lead, and had Detroit on the ropes, but the mid-western girls got things going and prevailed in the end 3-1.
In the second game, it was combination of old foes from California facing VT.

Southbay Supply Wins Vermont Class “E” Softball Title

NEWPORT-After losing their first game of the tournament, Southbay Supply ran roughshod over the losers bracket, and eventually besting the team that put them there in the first place to win the Vermont Class “E” State Title on Sunday afternoon at Gardner Park in Newport. The team will now start fundraising for their trip to nationals in Ohio.
The title is the first in the team's history.

OEC Thunder Battle, But Fall to Norwich in Doubleheader

NEWPORT-The Thunder ran into some stiff competition on Sunday afternoon, falling by the scores of 9-6 in the first game and 7-3 in the second to the Norwich Monarchs.
The team is looking to put together a tournament in the area before the summer is over.

Harter Wins VSWGA Seniors’ Championship

ORLEANS-Mari Harter of the host Orleans club carded a final round of 81 for a 162 total to win the 2013 Ruth Raymond Jones Seniors' Championship by three strokes over a charging Sue Bagley of St. Johnsbury.
Sue shot the best round of the day (79) to move into the runner-up spot with a 165 total. Rhonda Colvard of Burlington was third with a 168 total. Deidre Mahler of the Country Club of Vermont was fourth at 170.
Margie Kaat, who was in contention after Wednesday's round, was forced to withdraw after breaking her wrist Wednesday afternoon.

Lake Region Wins Babe Ruth District Championship

ORLEANS-After a rough game on Saturday that saw Lyndon rack up 19 runs in the blistering heat on Lake Region, Lake Region returned the favor on Sunday, plating 19 runs of their own in a 19-9 five-inning ten-run ruled game three.
The boys in gray got things going early as Cole Azur drove in TJ Santaw and Liam Kennedy to give the visitors a 2-0 lead with one out in the first. Azur would come around and score on Brady Perron's single.
Lyndon would tally a run in the bottom of the frame, and it was 3-1 after one.

Kings’ Battle Back, But Lose in Extra Frames Against Lynx

ORLEANS-Despite a seventh inning rally that had Tyler Sanville drive in the tying run, the OEC Kings fell to the Burlington Lynx 6-5 in extra innings on Friday evening.
On Sunday, in the first game of their doubleheader, the team got a much needed win against the Colchester Cannons, as they won 7-6.
North Country's Chase LaCourse drive in 3 runs to help fuel the win.

Lyndon Forces Game 3 Against LR in Babe Ruth Baseball, UPDATE!

ORLEANS–Lake Region was the site of what has turned out to be two days of championship baseball, as Lake Region and Lyndon squared off for the 13 year-old Babe Ruth District Championship this weekend.
The Lake Region team is not a true "Lake Region" team per se, but a combination of North Country and Lake Region players playing underneath the banner of the Lake Region name.
With a high, hot sun presiding over all in attendance, game one in the best-of-three series got underway.

Newport Golfers Win Two Out Of Three Divisions on NEK Jr. Tour

ORLEANS–The NEK Junior Golf Tour opened play at the Orleans Country Club on Wednesday afternoon.
The day began with a one hour golf clinic at noon before tournament play got underway at 1:00, followed by lunch and prizes after.
The twenty-one participants were divided into three groups, boys 8-11 and 12-15, and girls division that had players ranging in age from 11-14.

Alex Giroux is the Kingdom’s Quiet Champion

NEWPORT–Alex Giroux is a good golfer.
Actually, Alex Giroux is a very good golfer, but you would never know that if you sat down to talk with him.
The soft-spoken fourteen year-old from Derby is one of the best young golfers in the state of Vermont, and he has back-to-back Vermont State Junior Stroke Play Championships to prove it.
But he was so quiet about it, even the Newport Country Club's Head Pro Kim O'Neil didn't know he had won in 2011 until the 2012 tournament.
But you don't just up and win titles, not in this game.

Hartford Bests Lake Region to Win 12-U Ripken Championship

BARTON–Hunter Perkins struck out 16 batters, including setting down the side in order by way of the K three times, as Hartford defeated Lake Region 9-2 to win the Vermont State 12-U Cal Ripken championship on Sunday afternoon.
Lake Region coach Shawn Perron was extremely proud of his team's efforts in the loss.
"I thought it was a well rounded effort," said the coach. "I thought our bats did what I expected them to do, and our defense was awesome. Defense is what kept us in this entire game."
