NEWPORTâ€“The Falcons and Lady Rangers rekindled their tennis rivalry on Wednesday afternoon, squaring off on the courts of Prouty Beach.
North Country was forced to forfeit both the number 5 singles and the number 2 doubles, spotting Lake Region to the early 2-0 lead.
With much ground to cover, the Falcons got down to business.
India Bluett and Brianna Fontaine battled all the way to the tiebreaker, with Bluett emerging as the victor, 6-2, 4-6, 12-10.
Danielle Therrien bested Judit Simon 6-4, 7-5, and Meira Buck had the third NCU singles win, defeating Shaylyn Beaton 6-0, 6-1.
SOUTH BURLINGTON-The third tournament of the golf season found two girls from North Country Union High School, and two girls for the Newport Country Club Junior program traveling to the Vermont National Country Club on Wednesday.
The high school was represented by Captain Paige Gagnon and Tanika Demers while the Newport Club was represented by eighth grader Katie Goulet and seventh grader Carley Giroux, both girls come from a long line of golfers.
The National CC is known for its great fairways and greens, and difficult roughs.
ORLEANS-The BFA Fairfax Bullets used seven runs in the 5th inning to break open a close game en route to a 15-1 decision over Lake Region in high school softball Tuesday.
In what has become a recurring theme for the Rangers this season, poor defense opened the flood gates for a Fairfax club that has won 27 of their last 28 games. â€śOffensively, weâ€™ve been doing some good things,â€ť said Ranger coach Matt Tinker. â€śBut defensivelyâ€¦ man, we need to figure some things out.â€ť
ORLEANSâ€“For most of Tuesday's contest between Lake Region and BFA Fairfax, the Rangers' Matt Messier and the Bullets' Alex Chapman engaged in quite the pitchers duel, but a four-run 7th inning broke things open for BFA, and they won 7-1 going away.
With the loss, Lake Region now stands at 4-3, while BFA remains undefeated at 8-0.
Matt Messier took the loss, striking out 10, and walking five.
Alex Chapman won, fanning 11 and walking one.
Next up for the Rangers, they will travel today to face Hazen at 4:30.

NEWPORTâ€“They fought long and hard, but in the end, the North Country boys tennis team fell to the Mount Mansfield Cougars by a score of 6-1.
The loss moves the Falcons record to 1-4, and they will hit the courts again on Saturday when they travel to Waterbury to face Harwood at 10:00.

Montpelier 5, Lake Region 0
ORLEANSâ€“Always a tough competitor, the Montpelier Solons came into Lake Region and swept the Lady Rangers on Monday.
Annie Jones felled Judit Simon 6-0, 6-2 at the number one position.
Caitlyn Bushara kept the Solon train moving with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Brianna Fontaine.
Alexis Buicider brought down Shaylyn Beaton 6-1, 6-1.
Maddie Dunn had Alyssa Lawson's number, winning 6-0, 6-0, and finally Rhea Constantino went over Crystal Triebe by the same score.
ORLEANSâ€“When members and guests of the Orleans Country Club stop by the pro shop to sign in, or head into the bar for a post-round beverage, they will be find a new look OCC, as many of the club's members, in tandem with local business' get together to give the building a face lift.
"We wanted to change the club up to make it new and exciting," said Tony Daniels, a local contractor who was one of the lead men on the project. "We want to have younger people coming in and participating. We have been doing things the same way for quite awhile and we are looking to do different things."
ORLEANS-There was a good old-fashioned donnybrook at Lake Region Thursday afternoon, as Danville and LR squared off in high school softball action.
By the time everyone in attendance finally exhaled, the host Rangers had escaped with an exciting 9-8 victory.
Danville starter Kaylynn Zangla took the loss, striking out four without allowing a walk. Hannah Leroux went the distance for LR, allowing 6 hits, striking out 5 and walking 6.
LR moves to 4-2 with the win, and hosts undefeated and defending D2 champion Fairfax Tuesday. Danville evens their record at 4-4.
MVU 8, NCU 1
NEWPORTâ€“Missisquoi scored six runs in the first two innings and never looked back, defeating North Country on Thursday afternoon.
Wyatt Prue took the loss for the Falcons, Nick Sicard had two hits and Chase LaCourse drove in the lone NCU run.
Sophomore Bryce Carter got his first taste of pitching at the varsity level, working four innings of relief.
On Friday, the Falcons fell again by the same 8-1 score, this time to South Burlington.
According to multiple news outlets across the sate, including the Burlington Free Press and WPTZ, News Channel 5, local police have cited three area athletes in a local soda bottle bomb explosion.
Joshua Tompkins (19), Jason Hatin (18) and Collin Brennon (16) were cited with possession of destructive devices and unlawful mischief, according to Newport Police.
The trio are scheduled to appear in court May 7, 2013.
