Colchester Comes on Late, Hand Falcons First Loss of Season

January 8, 2013

NEWPORT–The North Country Falcons' girl's basketball team managed to hang with the Colchester Lakers for two and two-third quarters before the visitors pulled away in the Lakers 45-33 win on Monday night.
"The biggest picture that affected us tonight was the fact that we could not get the ball inbounds on out of bounds plays," said coach Christiane Brown. "Our offense was also very hot and cold. Sometimes we could run it, sometimes not. When we ran it we looked good, when we didn't run it and it became more of a one man show, it was not a very fluid offense."

LRU 59, Winooski 36
ORLEANS–Alex Beauregard had a game-high sixteen points and Shaquille Urie added eleven as the Lake Region Rangers rolled past the Winooski Spartans 59-36 on Monday evening.
Things were relatively close early, as the Rangers put up thirteen points in each of the first two quarters, compared to 9 and 8 by the Spartans.
The third quarter saw the game shift completely over to Lake Region when they took off, outscoring Winooski 17-2 in the period.
Beaugard had six of his sixteen in the third, while Urie was behind him with four.

Officials Ruin Quarter-final Rematch as Rebels Top Falcons 5-3

January 6, 2013

JAY–If ever there was a contest where the officials dictated the pace of the game, it was the North Country-South Burlington hockey struggle on Saturday night at the Ice Haus.
While the Rebels won the game 5-2, the scoring was not the story of the game, it was the men in black white who were there to “officiate.”
Twenty-one total penalties were called, including 12 on the Falcons alone, and many of the calls made were either inaccurate or of a phantom nature, completely eliminating the possibility of any flow or continuity in the game.

North Country Comeback Falls Short Against Essex

January 6, 2013

NEWPORT–After a high scoring affair that saw St. Johnsbury defeat North Country 101-75 Thursday night, the Falcons were back on the court on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Essex Hornets.
Things did not go much better for the hometown team in this one either as they fell 85-67.
While they did not get the win, the boys did not shy away from their opponent, showing great fortitude in the second half as they tried to rally back into the game.

Weekend Round-up: Falcon Girls Excel on Ice and Court, UCA, LRU Hoops Win

January 6, 2013

STOWE–Finally, after years of being on the losing end of things, the North Country girl's hockey team picked up a win against Stowe, defeating the Raiders 2-0.
The score could have been much higher, but Stowe's netminder Danielle Mayo was a rock in the nets, stopping sixteen shots in just the first period alone.
"We had a good first period, but Mayo is a tough goalie to beat," said coach Claude Paul.
Mayo stood tall until the third period, when the Falcons were finally able to get a pair past her.

Boy’s Victorious in OT, Girl’s Go Big as Falcon Hockey Wins Out

January 3, 2013

BURLINGTON–Two minutes into overtime, Ryan Paul cut through the slot and fired a high back-hander in the glove side of the net to complete the Falcons comeback and give North Country a 5-4 win over Colchester to move their record to 5-0 on the season.
"We are very excited with the win, and to be 5-0 on the season," said head coach Andrew Roy.
The boys had to battle all game long against the Lakers, and were down 2-0 after one period of play.
With 7:59 left in the second, Logan Fortier popped in his first goal of the night to cut the lead to 2-1. Ben Pecue had the assist on the score.
