NEWPORT–Isaac Bliss hit a two-run home run in the first inning and his teammates would score five more runs in the fifth inning, as North Country bested Lake Region 7-1 to kick off the 10-U district tournament on Monday.
After darkening skies threatened to post-pone the start of the tournament, the sun made an appearance for the duration of the game, and the two teams were able to get their game in.
Vermont State Cal Ripken Commissioner Bernie Gonyaw threw out the ceremonial first pitch, and after that it was game on.
NEWPORT-Orleans-Essex-Caledonia's Tyler Sanville drove home the game winning run in the 9th inning of the OEC v Franklin County Legion ball contest, allowing the home-county Kings to pick up a 7-6 win in their only scheduled appearance at Gardner Park.
Special thanks to Tammy LaCourse for the updates.
Looking ahead, the Kings will be in Burlington for a doubleheader on 6-23-13, and as info becomes available, it will be posted.
No details on Graciano's lower-body injury as of yet. For Kings' fans, hopefully it's not as bad as Bergeron's.
The Lake Region Babe Ruth 1 Team came away with a convincing 10–4 win over Newport on Tuesday night thanks to timely hitting, good solid defense and strong pitching from Denver Bodette.
Newport had one bad inning, the third, where they gave up 7 unearned runs on physical & mental errors that lead to there down fall.
A bright spot for Newport was the pitching of Caleb Lanoue and T.J. Santaw, with both pitchers striking out 5 of 6 batters in 2 innings of work. Newport faces Lyndonville at home on Thursday, with Lake Region 1 facing Lake Region 2 on the same day.

NEWPORT–Gary Atchinson is to tennis in Newport as Ted Williams is to baseball in Boston.

BRANDON–Lake Region's baseball season came to a close last week, as the 7th seed lost to the number two seed Otter Valley Otters 6-0 in quarterfinal play.
Despite the second round loss, coach Eric Degre was pleased with his team's season, posting on the Rangers website, "It was a great baseball season for the Rangers! Well done men!"
Otter Valley got off to the fast start, touching Ranger starter Matt Messier for a pair of runs in the first.
The Otters would slowly add to their lead, scoring again in the second, once in the fourth, and twice in the fifth.
OTTER VALLEY-The curtain closed on the Lake Region Rangers’ softball season Wednesday, as the girls in blue fell to Otter Valley 10-2.
“It’s not like they (Otter Valley) knocked the cover off of the ball. They 10 hits, but 3 were bunts singles, and 3 more were squirrely little squib hits.
“But their hits were timely, and when you walk 8 and make a few errors, there was always someone on base when they did get a hit. We had two or three of the hardest hit balls all day, but right at someone. Their shortstop and catcher were outstanding defensively,” said LR coach Matt Tinker.
SOUTH BURLINGTON–How important is one run?
Pretty darn important if you ask North Country coach Brian Bonvechio.
With nobody out and the Falcons trailing 2-0 in the top of the third of their play-down game with South Burlington, Jared Hussey crossed home plate, but the umpires ruled that he did not touch the dish, and was thusly called out.
North Country's next batter Tyler Sanville would hit into an inning-ending double-play, killing off the Falcons’ momentum.

ORLEANS-Undaunted by facing an unknown team without their ace on the mound, No. 7 seeded Lake Region knocked off No. 10 Harwood 8-4 behind a strong performance from Dustin Bathalon in Division II high school baseball play-down action Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore Logan Harper paced the Rangers with a trio of hits and three RBIs, followed by Matt Messier (three hits) and Josh Locke (two hits).

Kayla Royer, Sarah Burnham and Whitney Poginy all got the start against Winooski, while the fourth senior, Hannah Leroux was on her class trip.
The Lady Rangers would not disappoint, as they plated 23 runs in the very one-sided 23-4 victory.
