CASTLETONâ€“The Vermont Softball Coaches Association, partnering with Castleton State College, gave the opportunity of a lifetime to thirty-six of the top softball players and coaches in the state when the group gathered for a weekend of softball at the North-South All-Star Series.
Catcher Chelsey Thibeault from Lake Region was the sole representative from Orleans County at the event.
The best of three series got underway on Friday as the players battled not only each other, but the gruelling heat as well.
The North swept the double-header, winning by the scores of 9-7 and 6-4.
The Lake Region Sun Devils 16-U girls softball squad continued their summer season with three thrilling games this past week.
On Friday evening, the Sun Devils traveled to the campus of Lyndon State College for a twi-night doubleheader against the Lyndon Orioles.
In the opener, each club battled back and forth in a tightly contested game, with Lake Region eventually pulling out an 8-7 victory.
Many thanks goes to Rick and Laurie Roberge for coaching and supporting this team to be able to play in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine tournaments this year. The team took 1st place in the VT State 17-U AAU B Division Tournament and finished their season by winning all 4 games in Saco, Maine. Traveling out of state to play tournaments brings players to next level of competition, and to win in Maine was a huge success. Awesome job to the players and the coach.
GLOVERâ€“After winning their first game on Friday against Connecticut Valley 13-3, the Lake Region 10-U's lost their next two games to bow out of the 2012 Cal Ripken 10-U Tournament.
Friday's game featured Parker Perron on the mound, and the youngster went the distance, pitching a gem for the home town team.
Saturday was a different story.
In the early game, under a bright and sunny sky, Manchester got to pitcher Jack King early, knocking in ten runs in the first three innings.
NEWPORTâ€“The Lake Region and North Country 12-U Cal Ripken baseball teams got together for a best of the three series starting last Thursday to see who be crowned the District Champions.
Lake Region, with their power bats and top notch pitching, needed just two games to take the title, winning 5-1 and 9-5.
Starting on the hill for game one were Orleans County Thunder teammates Parker Brown, for Lake Region, and TJ Santaw, for North Country.
The duo were fresh off of a championship run in Drummondville, where they were lights out on the mound for their select team.
The Lake Region Sun Devils U-16 girls softball team kept rolling along this past week, notching a pair of wins and a tie.
On Saturday, the Sun Devils atoned for an earlier defeat at the hands of the Lyndon Aâ€™s, with a 21-6 victory. The win marked the third time this summer LR has defeated an opponent whom they had earlier lost to.
GLOVERâ€“If you are a fan of both North Country and Lake Region baseball, things could not have turned out any better for you than they did on Saturday.
In the 10-U Cal Ripken District Tournament, three teams were vying for two spots at the State Championship to be held in Glover next weekend.
Lake Region, the host team, automatically qualified based on their status as tourney hosts, so it was between North Country and Three Rivers to see who would fill the final slot.
LR and NC squared off in the opening game, a 13-3 four inning win for Lake Region.
The Kingdom Crush soccer club accomplished something this past weekend no team from Lake Region has ever done before.
The Crush won the Essex United Soccer Tournament, the largest tourney of itsâ€™ kind in the state.
The two day soccer bonanza featured teams from VT, NY, CT and NH. Their performance over the weekend capped off a perfect 13-0 season.
Winning five soccer games in two days, including 3 hours of games on Sunday, required the contribution of every player to overcome the grueling heat and tough competition.
ESSEXâ€“This past weekend it played out like a survivor series. The U-14 Girls Wildcat team outwit, outplayed,and outlasted 11 other teams to become Champions of the 2012 Essex Soccer Tournament hosted by the Essex soccer clubs. Under a cloudless sky, the Island, otherwise known as the Tree Farm, was a swarm of soccer players and their families who came to cheer the girls on to the finish. There were multiple age groups from U-8 to U-17. Derby was well represented sending 16 teams to the tournament.
This weekend the Green Mountain Classic was held at Newport Country Club. This tournament was a 36 hole two-person best ball gross event. On Saturday we had Brian Cook Brew Master of Kingdom Brewing on our tenth tee giving samples of his beer.
The Championship Flight was won by Steve Fisher and Tyler Colter, playing out of Newport CC. They shot 65&70 for a 7 under par 135. Shawn Smith and Dan Griffiths from Newport took second with a 2 under 142.
