Derby Development: Walmart Public Hearing Scheduled

Last week plans and an application were submitted to the Town of Derby and the Agency of Natural Resources for permits to build a Walmart in Derby.
The Derby Planning Commission will hold a public meeting on the plans Monday, June 16 at 7 p.m. in the Derby Municipal Building, 124 Main Street, to consider the proposal.

Newport Development: Last Tenant In Spates Block Evicted

NEWPORT CITY — An effort by tenant Daniel Kelley to prevent Memphremagog Rentals from evicting him was not successful. The Vermont Supreme Court issued a ruling this month rejecting Kelley’s appeal and affirmed the Superior Court’s decision.
Kelley moved to an apartment in the Spates Block on Main Street in Newport in March 2010. The block was recently sold to developer Bill Stenger, who plans to raze it and build the Renaissance Block.

Ronk–– Beverly Norton, 87, passed away on May 22, 2014 after a period of declining health at her daughter Judy’s home in Lake Worth, FL.

Seneca Mountain Wind Proposal Withdrawn

Seneca Mountain Wind has withdrawn its proposal to connect to the grid in the Northeast Kingdom. Just over two years ago Eolian Renewable Energy, in partnership with Nordex, proposed an industrial wind generation facility in Essex County. Eolian envisioned the construction of up to 35 towers four hundred feet tall, located in Newark, Brighton, and the unorganized gores in the Essex County.

Vermont State Police: Derby Station Gets New Commander

DERBY – Lt. Walt Smith is the new station commander at the Derby State Police barracks. Smith took over for Lt. Kirk Cooper May 18. Cooper is now a lieutenant in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Troop B, which includes the Derby, St. Johnsbury, and Bradford stations.
