Jay Peak Applies For Act 250 Permit For Recreation Center

Jay Peak Resort is in the midst of trying to build a recreation center, but is at odds with the town over parking and aesthetics. So far the town has not issued a permit for the plans. Jay Peak applied for an Act 250 permit on January 29 for the center.

Legislators Talk Farming, Gas, Plastic, and Drugged Driving In Irasburg

IRASBURG - The Orleans County Farm Bureau held its annual legislative pancake breakfast held at the town hall Monday morning where farmers had an opportunity to meet their lawmakers face-to-face.

Committee Offers Recommendations For West Side Middle School

NEWPORT CITY - A special committee studying the feasibility of adding a middle school to serve the west side of Orleans County has completed the first step in the process. The committee has been meeting for two years with the guidance of Wayne Gersen, an educational consultant.

Fire Destroys Local Business

DERBY - Fire consumed the building rented by Hackett’s Welding Shop on the Palin Farm Road Friday night.
Owner Earl Hackett noticed the fire around 10 p.m. when he looked out the window of his house up the hill from the building.

Coventry Residents Upset With State Taking Wood

Some Coventry residents are upset with the state highway department for taking firewood they say is theirs.
Following the ice storm, state highway workers came in along the Route 5, cut up the mangled trees and took the wood with them without notifying the property owners.

Town Meeting Preview: Glover Town Budget To Increase Slightly

This Tuesday Glover Town will meet to vote on the annual budget. This year citizens will be looking at a $37,497.26 increase over the 2013 budget for a total of $908,834.35, a 4.3 percent total increase.

Driver Responsible For Double Fatal Pleads Guilty To Gross Negligent Operation

NEWPORT CITY - The driver responsible for killing an elderly couple in a 2012 crash, pleaded guilty in an agreement with the state to two felony charges of gross negligent operation with fatalities resulting, in the Criminal Division of Orleans Superior Court Thursday. Alexis Gabree, 28, of Enosburg Falls will be sentenced in about four weeks so the family of the victims may participate.
