Shamrocks Open U-16 Tier II Championships With a Win

SAN JOSE, CA-The Vermont Shamrocks took the first step forward to their goal of winning a national title with a 4-1 win over the East Coast Wizards in their first game of the USA Hockey Girls U-16 Tier II National Tournament on Wednesday.
It looked like the ECW was (were) going to get the early advantage, but Courtney Peyko stood tall in the VT net, turning away an early penalty-shot.
The Shamrocks, motivated by the stop, won the race to the score board when Molly Dunphy kicked off the scoring late in the first period, clanging home the first goal of the game.

DERBY LINE HAS NEW VILLAGE CLERK

DERBY - Karen Jenne has served as the Derby Line Village Clerk, treasurer and delinquent tax collector for many years, but all that ended Tuesday evening at the annual village meeting.
Sue Best, a Derby Lister, wanted to nominate Claudia Letourneau, but Letourneau was not a registered voter in Derby Line in time to qualify as a candidate. In a surprise move, Best nominated Sharon Booth, a two-year village resident.

FRESH AIR FAMILY REUNITED

NEWPORT - Shortly after getting married and before having children of their own, Sean and Heidi Santaw decided to try out being parents by participating in the Fresh Air Program. The program invites children from New York City to more rural areas for a vacation, a taste of fresh air, and the a look at a different culture.
“More than anything, it was just giving them what life in Vermont was like,” said Heidi.
They heard about the program through a neighbor’s family who had hosted a Fresh Air child. Sean’s grandparents had also welcomed a Fresh Air child into their home.

ORLEANS–For the Lake Region softball program, the numbers are down in 2013.
Only eighteen players turned out this spring, so while he will not be able to field a JV squad while the varsity is in action, head coach Matt Tinker is excited about the team he has this season.

Youthful Falcons Ready to Face Metro Challenges

NEWPORT–With only one senior and four juniors, the North Country softball team is going to have to rely heavily on their younger players as they set out for the 2013 season.
"I think the beginning of the season is going to be a test for us," said head coach Leslie Dunn. "Hopefully once we get a few games we will get into our groove, but we are still really young.”
Dunn's crew will get a little pre-season test this weekend, weather permitting, when they head over to MVU for a softball jamboree on Saturday.

Lasher–– Patrick O., 54, of Morgan passed away on March 9, 2013 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, after a valiant fight against Pancreatic Cancer.

SAVING THE RED BARN

April 2, 2013

NEWPORT CITY – In an effort to save the so-called Red Barn on Coventry Street from destruction, the city council decided Monday evening to give local resident Frank Knoll, of Northern Views LLC, more time to find another use and location for the structure.
The city owns the barn and has offered to let Knoll take it, if he can move it.
Newport City can't do anything with the barn because of it's location in the city's wellhead protection area and the city has no use for it.

GOODBYE PARTY FOR STATESIDE CHALET

JAY – Jay Peak Resort is getting ready to take down one of its last old buildings and replace it with larger, more modern structures.
The Stateside Chalet is slated to come down. In its place will go a 67,000 square foot hotel with 84 rooms, along with a restaurant and a  22,000 square foot day lodge with ski and rider services including a new rental shop. The development footprint will span from the current stateside chalet location to the ski patrol building.

FIRE DESTROYS SUGARHOUSE

April 2, 2013

BARTON – A blaze destroyed a sugarhouse on the East Albany Road last evening.
Firefighters responded around 5:40 p.m. to a fully engulfed building fire. By the time they arrived on the scene, 13-minutes later, the building was already flat, said Fire Chief David Claeys.

Black Ice Select Team Wins Montreal Tournament

MONTREAL, QC–Five different North Country Falcons (Ross DeLaBruere, Ryan Paul, Chase LaCourse, Adam Viens, Quinn Nelson) suited up for the Black Ice Black midget select team a few weekends ago, and along with the rest of the team, went undefeated in tournament play, coming back across the border with the championship trophy and individual gold medals.
