Peter Lavalette was stopped for drunk driving in Indiana, and before the deputy sheriff could book him, he apparently confessed to killing a man in Westfield. Wednesday, he pleaded not guilty in Orleans Criminal Court. Read about it on the front page of Thursday's edition of The Newport Daily Express for July 11, 2013.

A Derby man wanted in connection with a recent Westfield, VT, murder is getting a free ride home from Indiana, thanks to the Vermont State Police. North Country Hospital has announced that it is cutting 19 positions, reducing hours for some employees and closing two clinical services, due to financial difficulties. Alex Giroux is the Kingdom’s Quiet Champion

NEWPORT–Alex Giroux is a good golfer.
Actually, Alex Giroux is a very good golfer, but you would never know that if you sat down to talk with him.
The soft-spoken fourteen year-old from Derby is one of the best young golfers in the state of Vermont, and he has back-to-back Vermont State Junior Stroke Play Championships to prove it.
But he was so quiet about it, even the Newport Country Club's Head Pro Kim O'Neil didn't know he had won in 2011 until the 2012 tournament.
But you don't just up and win titles, not in this game.

Island Pond’s Cardboard Boat Race: A Traditional Part of July 4th Events

Island Pond, VT–– Sunday, July 7th, a half dozen brave teams competed against each other in a paddling race on the waterfront in Island Pond as part of the Independence Day weekend celebration. Instead of kayaks or canoes, however, their boats were made of cardboard!

Louis Garneau Ready To Build

DERBY– Louis Garneau is planning to build a new $8-million facility on the Derby Road within the next few weeks. Company officials made the announcement at a press conference Monday morning that included Louis Garneau, his family, the general manager, Governor Peter Shumlin, a couple of local dignitaries, and others.

The Newport Parks and Recreation team go head-to-head against The Newport Ambulance Service during the bed races in Gardner Park Thursday. Newport Parks and Recreation walked away as the over all winners.
