NEWPORT - A hearing on the case of the two Sterling College students arrested on Lowell Mountain was heard Thursday in Orleans Superior Court Criminal Division.
The students’ attorney, Kristina Michelson, filed motions for the case to be dismissed.
David Martorana and Trevor Ring were arrested on Lowell Mountain on Nov. 16. The two were among several people occupying the mountain and opposed to the construction of the wind project currently underway, but both students said they did not want to get arrested.
NEWPORT CITY – A long time Newport business has new owners. Lisa and Alan Desroches of Coventry have purchased Margie’s Half Off Cards from Margie and Larry Cummings of Montgomery Center.
The Desroches renamed the store to Suzy-Lynn’s Gifts & 1/2 Cards after their daughters, six-year-old Julia Suzanne and 18-year-old Natashia Lynn. Natashia is a freshmen at Lyndon State College. The Desroches also have a son, Nathaniel, who lives in the Woodsville, N.H., area.
Lisa Desroches always wanted to own her own business. “I call it a dream come true,” she said.

NEWPORT – A motion hearing was held Thursday morning on the case of the journalist who was arrested while covering a protest on Lowell Mountain. Attorney Phil White representing Chris Braithwaite, Publisher of the Barton Chronicle, had filed a motion to dismiss.
Judge Robert Garety, Jr. asked both parties if either had come across a case with similar circumstances so that he could review what the other judge’s thoughts were on the matter in helping with his decision. Neither party had come across any similar cases.
NEWPORT CITY – David Wells, 49, of Newport, entered pleas of guilty to a variety of misdemeanor charges in Orleans County Court Thursday.
One charge was petit larceny for stealing Valerie Meggison's Teddy bear on Oct. 16, 2011.Meggison called 911 to report that Wells had fled from her residence with the bear. She told Officer Charles Moulton that she and Wells had purchased five “Tall Boy” beer cans at Azur’s Market and returned to her residence where Wells consumed the beer and vodka. Wells took the bear when Meggison refused to give him more alcohol.

JAY–With the crowd already warmed up from the girls big win, the Falcon boys were able to ride the back of their stand-out goaltender all the way to the 3-0 win over Champlain Valley Union.
"Chris Bronson was amazing tonight," said assistant captain Nate Stewart, “Everything (he did) was just perfect. He covered us many, many times and definitely kept us in it.”
While there was not a lot of flow early in the game (or for the rest of the contest for that matter), North Country was the aggressor early.

JAY–While it did not start out as an highly offensive contest, it certainly finished as one, as the North Country hockey girls pumped in seven third period goals, routing the Woodstock Wasps 10-2 on Wednesday night.
The Falcons got scoring from five different players, two hat-tricks, one play-maker, and twenty-five total points in their highest offensive output of the season.
Emilie Paul got scoring started in the first period when she fired a low wrister past Woodstock netminder Emma Astbury, who is listed as a defenseman on the Wasps roster. Adrianna Fournier had the assist.

The North Country snowboard teams took to the slopes of Stowe on Wednesday.
The Boys had two riders finish in the top ten with Josh Brien taking home 4th place and Justin Christopher in 8th.
Nick Kincaid took 18th, followed by Noah St. Marie in 19th, Chuck Norton in 35th, and J Mahieux in 41st
In the girls race, Danielle Gabucci finished a team best 10th place, followed by Gina Basiliere in 13th and Emily Pennington in 21st. Gaia Riskin and Kaila DeBonville did not finish.
ORLEANS—When the Richford Falcons traveled to Lake Region Wednesday, the game was over before the ball was even tipped. The Rangers were able to dominate offensively and defensively en-route to a 51 point 64-13 victory.
Darik Messier started the game on a personal 4-0 run, and the blue and white were on top 12-0 before the Falcons got their first point with 3 minutes left in the first. Marquel Webster would add a turn-around jumper as time expired to put Lake Region on top 14-3 at the end of 1 period of play.
NEWPORT, VT - Twenty-five physicians and medical personnel have come out publicly in support of North Country Hospital's CEO Claude Fort and the hospital's board of trustees in a letter to the Newport Daily Express.
MONTPELIER – Property owners involved in Current Use may soon pay a different amount if they decide to take their property out of the program. The bill is now in the Vermont Senate Committee of Rules. The House approved the bill last year.
