NEWPORT CITY - Lawmakers, during the 2011-2012 legislative session, decided to allow medical marijuana dispensaries in the state. Now Newport City officials are trying to decide if they want the dispensaries in their communities.Â
Tuesday, the planning commission, at the request of the Newport City Council, talked to Newport City Police Chief Seth DiSanto about if the city should disallow dispensaries in the city.Â

Pepyneâ€“â€“ Edward Walter, Sr. of Derby, Vermont and Ashfield, MA passed away in Derby, Vermont October 4, 2013. He was 87. Born December 27, 1925 in Springfield, MA, he was the only child of Walter Henry and Francis A (Carroll) Pepyne.Â

Brightonâ€“â€“ At the Brighton Planning Committee meeting held Monday, the first official notice that the Dollar General store intends to build in Island Pond was a topic of discussion. The chain store, which has expanded rapidly into Vermont in the past few years, has contacted the town and representatives are scheduled to be at the next planning meeting to be held on October 17. Preliminary plans include purchasing the now defunct Brighton Motor Sports property on the corner of Cross and Alder Street and also the Critters and Creations store at 39 Alder Street.
NEWPORT CITY - After a lengthy discussion Monday night, the city council took no action on the Maplefield store permit.Â
Developers want to tear down the One Stop Mini Mart and Memphremagog Rentals Building and replace them with a new gas station, retail store, and deli. However, some council members, City Manager John Ward Jr., and others recently expressed concerns that the Development Review Board (DRB) issued a permit without considering all Form-Base Code zoning requirements.

ORLEANSâ€“Before the heavens erupted, drenching all of those in attendance, the Lake Region girls soccer team was able to score two goals to get the 2-0 win over Hazen on Monday afternoon.
"In weather like this you hope that you come out with a win and that the breaks go your way," said LRU coach Brad Urie. "Hazen played really tough, but a couple of bounces went our way and we were able to come away with the win."

NEWPORT CITY - There's a new dentist in town and his name is Dr. Ronald K. St. John.
St. John started working for Birchwood Dental Associates July 1. He relocated to the Northeast Kingdom from Jacksonville, FL. Prior to his move, St. John graduated from dental school at the University of Florida College.

Brightonâ€“â€“ Work on the lakeside walking path between Derby Street and the far corners of Lakeside park and the town beach is progressing quickly. Jim Webb, who won the contract for the project, was busy Monday operating his backhoe near Island Pond.

CHARLESTON, VT â€” NorthWoods Stewardship Center is seeking nominations for the first annual George Buzzell Forest Stewardship Award. In honor of the esteemed county forester for which it is named, this award will recognize an individual who is making a positive impact on Northeast Kingdom forests. The award will be presented at NorthWoodsâ€™ Annual Stewardship Celebration on Friday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 7 p.m.

ORLEANSâ€“After a sluggish first half of soccer, the Lake Region Rangers got some help from Orleans County's leading scorer Alex Beauregard, who deposited two goals behind Oxbow netminder Michael Hodge as the Rangers avenged an earlier defeat by the Olympians with a 2-0 win on Wednesday afternoon.
LR coach Tom Evans was a man of few words after the contest, saying just, "The second half was a lot better than the first half, but quite honestly, we need to play 80 minutes of soccer.
"The victory of nice, but we can't expect to win playing forty minutes of soccer."
Wellsâ€“â€“ Sandra L., 54, of Irasburg, VT, passed away suddenly at her home on October 1, 2013.
