Lyndon Scores Early and Often Against NCU

April 18, 2013

LYNDON–North Country's softball had a rough start to their season, as they fell to the Lyndon Institute Vikings 13-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
Despite the high score, which NCU coach Leslie Dunn said was a little misleading, the Falcons defense was on display, pleasing the coach to no end.
"I was very happy with our defense," said Dunn. "Two of our outfielders (Missy Morse, Mikaella Doran) picked up outfield assists, which you rarely see. Overall I am pretty pleased with they way they played, and what can I say, Lyndon got timely hitting and we didn't."

Vikings Edge Falcons 2-1 in Extra Innings

April 18, 2013

LYNDON–Despite being no-hit on Wednesday afternoon, the North Country Falcons took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh before the Lyndon Institute Vikings rallied to force extra innings, where they came away with the 2-1 win.
"The issue for us tonight was that we have not hit live pitching yet this year," said NCU coach Brian Bonvechio.
And he is not exaggerating either.
The Falcons have only seen pitches from Bonvechio and assistant coach Mike LaCourse, which makes it mighty difficult for players to be ready come Opening Day.

NEWPORT – The Northern Star is in the final stages preparing for its maiden voyage on Lake Memphremagog. Yesterday, an engineer, under the watchful eye of the U.S. Coast Guard, put the vessel through a series of mandatory stability tests.
The tests, which entail having large barrels of water that weight over 500 pounds each, determine the boat's safety and how many passengers it can hold.

In Vermont, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials are stopping all north-bound vehicles for inspection while helicopters buzzed Derby Line Village close enough to kick up dirt along the driveways. When asked if this activity is in response to the bombing in Boston, an agent on the scene replied, "Yes."

NEWPORT CITY - Monday, the Newport City Council decided to provide $2,000 in financial assistance to the Indoor Recreation of Orleans County (IROC) event known as the Kingdom Swim, even though Community National Bank foreclosed on the organization's building in Derby. The council also granted IROC's request to use city facilities this summer at no charge.
Phil White, executive director of the organization, jokingly called IROC "Outdoor Recreation of Orleans County."

DERBY, VT – The Derby Line Trustees along with Water Commissioner Gilles Blais joined the Derby Town Select Board at the table Monday night to present an update of the water line infrastructure project and ask if the town is willing to assist.
Trustee Keith Beadle said the Agency of Natural Resources had told him that the water line is in violation of its permit and the state agency has given the village until the end of 2014 to take action. The current situation could impact insurance protection rates, some pointed out, as water pressure is critically low for fighting fires.
