NEWPORT CITY – After more than three decades of serving the city, Police Chief J. Paul Duquette, 56, will hang up his gun belt one last time.
Duquette confirmed late yesterday he will retire on Aug. 1, 2012. He has already given the city council suggestions on how to proceed in finding his replacement.
Duquette is willing to train his replacement. “I hate to throw this in somebody’s lap without them doing some shadowing,” he said. Duquette would like to see a local person assume the position. “That’s how I ended up with the job 15 years ago.”
DERBY – Yesterday morning, law enforcement officers met at the Orleans County Sheriff's Department's new building on the Derby Road for a very important assignment – delivering Christmas presents to area schools.
School officials will distribute the toys, clothes and other presents to parents of predetermined children. In all, law enforcement officers delivered toys to 13 area children. Orleans County Sheriff's Dispatcher Tammy LaCourse estimated there were enough presents for 150 children, well over the goal of 95.
IRASBURG, VT - Each year, Bob and Rachel Booth, owners of Bob's Quick Stop on Route 14 between Irasburg and Albany, plan a huge Christmas party for area children and this year was certainly no different.
Sunday, Dec. 18, at exactly 1 PM, the Irasburg Fire Department delivered Santa (assisted by Omer Bousquet) to his chair, ready to greet the children. Fire Chief Robin Beaton noted that Santa is heavier this year so they will put more air in the truck tires next year.
Garth McKinney and Dave Miclette, playing all the favorite Christmas songs, provided live music for the afternoon.

NEWPORT, VT - Newport City Firefighters tended to a car that caught on fire at the One Stop Mini-Mart yesterday afternoon. A woman had called 911 yelling that the car was in flames.
Newport City Police arrived on scene and saw flames coming from the engine.
A passerby used a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze and police pushed the car away from the building. The car was not next to the pumps.
Edwin Bolton III of Newport Center owns the car.
NEWPORT – A cold wind coming off Lake Memphremagog whipped through a pup tent at the Emory Hebard State Office Building on Saturday.
Meanwhile, a group of demonstrators held signs and banged on drums as motorists passed by the busy intersection of Main and Coventry streets.
This Saturday marked the three-month anniversary of the founding of Occupy Wall Street in New York City. Demonstrations, marches and parties are being held around the country by members of the Occupy movement.
NEWPORT – People gathered around the Newport City Elementary School gymnasium last Thursday night to listen to the fourth, fifth, and sixth graders play and sing Christmas songs.
The Beginning Band, which included fourth graders, started off the concert by playing "Hot Cross Buns/Merrily We Roll Along." They then played three more songs including "Jingle Bells," which they played along with the Advanced Band (fifth and sixth graders) to end their program.
Next was the Advanced Band playing songs like "B B Rock," "Deck The Halls," "Our Director March," and finally "Christmas Chimes."
