SHEFFIELD, VT - The Sheffield Wind Project is up and running - officially. The huge blades have actually been turning in the wind for a week now, but Wednesday politicians, dignitaries, representatives from Green Mountain Power and about 500 people were on hand for the official ribbon cutting ceremony and celebratory barbecue.
Some of those people, of course, included protesters who have been adamantly opposing the development of mountainous ridgeline wind farms for some time. They have argued that the turbines are inefficient, bad for the environment, and just plain ugly.
DERBY - The proposed Derby Line wind turbines project was discussed at the Derby Selectman’s meeting last week. Some spoke in favor of the turbines while others spoke out against them.
Phil Letourneau, who has looked into allowing one on his farm, said that if landowners want to put turbines on their property they should be allowed to, and what neighbors think about it shouldn’t matter. Others disagreed with Letourneau’s comments, noting that the size of the project would effect others.

NEWPORT-The stage was set. A rested healthy North Country Falcons girl’s soccer team was poised and ready to defend home turf in Division One’s first round. With ten victories recorded during the fall campaign, this team was coming off seven straight wins. A seasoned group of Falcons girls had gone through the soccer wars together with the core dominated by proud seniors.
Rice Memorial had other ideas. The Green Knights struck for two goals in the games first 7 minutes and controlled play for large segments of the game winning the first round match 3-0.
CHELSEA -- The #14 seed Craftsbury Academy Chargers faced off against the #3 seed Chelsea Red Devils in the opening round of the Division 4 State Playoffs. The Chargers gave it all they could, but it was not enough and the Red Devils walked away with a 6-1 victory.
Coach Mike Ruetz said that his team “Came out hot and was ready to play. The passes were on target and the touches on the ball were great. Our offense flowed and worked together and the defense played tremendous against the constant Chelsea pressure.”
Craftsbury would head to the half only trailing by a score of 1-0.

NEWPORT, VT - In a continuation of last week's battle between Don and Shirley Nelson and Green Mountain Power (GMP), attorneys for the parties examined and cross-examined a number of witnesses Tuesday, including two local surveyors, Paul Hannon and Norbert Blais.
Don Nelson is arguing that Blais' original survey of the property line between Nelson and Benjamin “Trip” Wileman, where the GMP wind powers are being constructed, was inaccurate and that a property agreement between Nelson and Wileman was arrived at unfairly.
SHEFFIELD — Vermont's Burlington Electric Department is now receiving electricity from the Sheffield wind project. The blades on the huge wind turbines have been spinning for about a week.
A ribbon cutting ceremony for the project will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, and some protesters of Vermont's wind projects are planning to be there.
Gov. Peter Shumlin is expected to be at the ceremony.

ORLEANS–It took a long time, but it was well worth the wait as Shaquille Urie scored with just over four minutes to play in regulation to give Lake Region a 1-0 win over Mill River and send them into the second round of the play-offs.
"I thought we played relatively well given the field conditions," said Coach Evans.
For the bulk of game on Tuesday it was the Rangers who were dictating the pace of play on a beaten up and muddy LRUHS field. The team came out early and was aggressive on the ball, winning 50/50 battles and keeping the play in the Mill River end.

RICHFORD–To end the season, the UCA boys pulled out all the stops for their game against Richford.
“I can honestly say that each and every one of them played the best game of the season,” said Coach DeLaBruere
With Dale Martell out due to a Concussion from their game in Canaan on Tuesday, the Crusaders went to Richford with an 11 man roster.
Chris DeLaBruere once again had a stand out performance in the net including a few saves that would make any highlight reel.
