Cabot Slips Past UCA 5-2 on Slick Gardner Park Field

NEWPORT–In the second half of the Crusader doubleheader, UCA's boys (5-4-3) came out with a defensive strategy aimed at stopping the high-scoring Cabot Huskies (9-2-1).
Their plan was executed quite well in the first half, allowing just a goal, but in the second, Cabot tacked on four more, winning the contest 5-2.
"They gave me absolutely everything they had," said coach Alyssa DeLaBruere. "When we into this game I told them they would need to give everything they had to beat this team and they did that. Although we didn't win, I think it was a very evenly matched game."

Vachon Brings Wrestling History to Newport Rotary Club

NEWPORT–The members of the Newport Rotary Club had special visitor at their weekly meeting yesterday.
Legendary wrestler and promoter Paul "The Butcher" Vachon was Tuesday's guest, and the Pro Wrestling Hall of Famer entertained the crowd with stories about his wrestling past, his family and his ties to the local community.
Paul grew up in Dunkin, Quebec, which lies just over the Canadian border to the north of Newport area, more specifically on route 243, which connects to Vermont Highway 105.

NEWPORT CITY – A Burlington developer wants to turn his commercial building on Highland Avenue in Newport City into a residential housing complex.
Bob Miller, president and owner of R.E.M., said his firm is talking about turning the former Slalom Building, also known as the Old Hospital, into an apartment building.

New Opportunities for Donna Higgons

NEWPORT – The Executive Director of the North Country Chamber of Commerce retired last week.
Donna Higgons, now of Hyde Park, said it was time. She wants to enjoy the Northeast Kingdom with a paddle, on a bike, on snowshoes or skis, and by hiking. She is 68 years old, and with all the development and changes coming to Newport, Higgons says it is time for someone more energetic to take the reins.
Higgons described the recent proposals by developer Bill Stenger and partners as “very exciting.”

"It Can't Happen to Me!"

NEWPORT CITY – Wednesday evening, area residents are invited to North Country Union High School (NCUHS) for a community forum entitled “It Can’t Happen To Me!”
The Community Forum Coalition is sponsoring the event, which starts at 7 p.m. and continues to 8:30 p.m. It will feature personal stories of substance abuse, drinking and driving, DUI accidents and fatalities and the people left behind to pick up the pieces.
Local recording artist Wayne Warner will perform.

WIND PROTESTERS TAKE IT TO THE STATEHOUSE

MONTPELIER, VT - Over 200 Vermonters came together at a rally in Montpelier Friday to award Gov. Peter Shumlin, his administration, the Public Service Board, and wind developers a ceremonial Certificate of Public Harm (CPH) to recognize their support for the destructive development of big wind on Vermont's mountains.
The rally brought together citizens from all of Vermont's 14 counties, and took place on the State House grounds.

NEWPORT, VT - North Country Career Center students, Edy Bedard and Melody Davis, participated in the annual Rotary Duck Regatta. They applied marketing skills in designing and creating the 2’x2’ display featuring “A  DECA Duck.”

Batista Earns 200th Career Victory as Falcons Demolish Vikings 4-0

NEWPORT–Anna Bingham had a pair of goals and an assist to lead North Country (8-3-1) over Lyndon (1-10-1) 4-0, giving coach Joe Batista his 200th career victory.
"The first thing I want to do is thank Peter Alexander, who has been a JV coach and an assistant coach for me for years, and for the last few seasons he has been a co-coach," said Batista
"He is very knowledgeable and helps out tremendously on the defensive end of things. He and I have worked very well together and I want to give him a lot of credit.

Field Hockey Falcons, Ranger Boys Pick Up Wins in Weekend Round-up

North Country 1, Milton 0
MILTON– Mariah Roberts had the only goal of the contest as the Falcons (3-7-2)picked up their third win of the year, defeating D II Milton (3-8-1) 1-0.
"It was a phenomenal game," said coach Chantelle Bouchard. "The defense was outstanding. Everyone played their positions and backed each other up when they had to."
After a scoreless first, Roberts knocked in the winner at 11:36 of the second half to give North Country the win.
Danielle Gabucci had six saves in the game for the Falcons.
