March 20, 1924- June 15, 2012

On June 15, 2012, Philip R. Collette left this Earth surrounded by his loving family in Punta Gorda, Florida at Peace River Regional Hospital. Up until then, he had been living in Port Charlotte, Florida where he and his perfect match (Marcella, whom he married 66 years ago) have been enjoying retirement for 32 years. He passed without much discomfort after dealing with failing health for the last few years. This comfortable home was their pride and joy; with beautiful gardens, fruit trees and vegetables that the neighbors envied for many years.

Nelson Knight “Bud” Abbott

Cabot–– Nelson Knight “Bud” Abbott, 63, died unexpectedly on July 1, 2012, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born June 27, 1949 in Barre, the son of Knight and Ruth (Nelson) Abbott. He graduated from Cabot High School in the class of 1967. On August 8, 1986 he married Yolanda “Yogi” Hall in Woodbury.
In his earlier years he was a machinist for Elltee in Barre, The Vermont Machine Co. in Hardwick, Estabrook Engineering in Derby, and from 1979 until he retired he was employed by Russell Supply Co. in Burlington.

NVDA Supports Wind Moratorium

NEWPORT – The Northeastern Vermont Development Association (NVDA) board voted by a wide majority to support a three-year moratorium on industrial size wind developments. The vote Thursday evening at an NVDA’s dinner meeting at Le Belvedere in Newport was about 40 "yes" to about three "no" by a show of hands.
The Executive Committee had asked for a three-year period to suspend new wind turbine projects proposed at over 200 feet tall pending the study of impacts of such developments, costs versus benefits, and potential health effects.

Batchelor & Shaw Team Up for Orleans-1

DERBY – Two well-known residents are hoping voters will send them to the state house. 
Incumbent Lynn Batchelor of Derby Line is seeking her second term. Meanwhile, Loren Shaw, after a four-year hiatus, wants to return to his seat. Batchelor and Shaw, both Republicans, are running unopposed.
Batchelor called serving the people an honor and enjoys being at the statehouse. She serves on the Human Services Committee, which works closely with hospice care, the Department of Children and Families and the Area Agency on Aging.

Coutts Kicks Off Summer with New Building, Traditional Programs

DERBY - Coutts Moriarty Camp held an open house Friday to celebrate the opening of the new Education Lodge and Dining Hall.
Two years ago this was just a dream, but through the hard work and dedication of many volunteers and community businesses, organizations, and board members, the vision for the facility took shape and is now complete and ready for the upcoming season.

Lake Region Sweeps North Country to Win 12-U Ripken Districts

NEWPORT–The Lake Region and North Country 12-U Cal Ripken baseball teams got together for a best of the three series starting last Thursday to see who be crowned the District Champions.
Lake Region, with their power bats and top notch pitching, needed just two games to take the title, winning 5-1 and 9-5.
Starting on the hill for game one were Orleans County Thunder teammates Parker Brown, for Lake Region, and TJ Santaw, for North Country.
The duo were fresh off of a championship run in Drummondville, where they were lights out on the mound for their select team.

Sun Devils Continue to Roll, Rain or Shine

The Lake Region Sun Devils U-16 girls softball team kept rolling along this past week, notching a pair of wins and a tie.
On Saturday, the Sun Devils atoned for an earlier defeat at the hands of the Lyndon A’s, with a 21-6 victory. The win marked the third time this summer LR has defeated an opponent whom they had earlier lost to.

Lake Region and North Country 10-U’s Heading to States

GLOVER–If you are a fan of both North Country and Lake Region baseball, things could not have turned out any better for you than they did on Saturday.
In the 10-U Cal Ripken District Tournament, three teams were vying for two spots at the State Championship to be held in Glover next weekend.
Lake Region, the host team, automatically qualified based on their status as tourney hosts, so it was between North Country and Three Rivers to see who would fill the final slot.
LR and NC squared off in the opening game, a 13-3 four inning win for Lake Region.
