BRIDGING THE GAP

BROWNINGTON - The reconstruction of Bridge 9 on the Center Road dividing the Towns of Brownington and Barton will be completed this May when expansion joints, which need to be approved by state and federal agencies, are finished to allow flexibility during earthquakes or other events.
The bridge, probably built in the 1950s, was completely destroyed during Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.
The cost to replace the bridge is shared between the two towns, though Brownington is the owner of the project and bills

BAD DAY ON THE ROAD

JAY - There were some tense moments for the Missisquoi Valley Ambulance Service (MVAS) Thursday, when one unit was involved in an accident, thanks to bad roads, and a second went off into a ditch.
It all started when MVAS personnel responded to the North Jay Road for a medical emergency. Scanner reports indicated the patient might not have been breathing.

TASTING CENTER HAS FINAL HEARING

NEWPORT CITY - The Northeast Kingdom Tasting Center continues to move forward. The tasting center will be on Main Street and will be a combined food production, retail, and education center.
During the third and final required public hearing Monday, Mayor Paul Monette said the city received a $30,000 community development grant from the state.
Dave Snedeker, from the Northeastern Vermont Development Association, said the project received $5,000 in USDA technical assistance grant funds from Northern Investment Corporation and $5,000 in private business capital.

Boys Win, Girls Lose as Falcons Face Rice on the Road

SOUTH BURLINGTON–Adam Viens had two goals and an assist on Wednesday as North Country defeated Rice 6-3 at the Cairns Arena.
The Falcons had Chase LaCourse in goal, and despite the three goals allowed, LaCourse had a strong game in net for NCU, blocking 19 shots in the win.
"He made some good stops fur us tonight," said NCU coach Andrew Roy.
At the end of the first, the Falcons were up 2-1 on goals by Ryan O'Donnell and Viens.
By the time two periods had been played, the score was knotted at 3-3, with Ross DeLaBruere having scored the third Falcon goal.

DREAMING OF GOLD

BARTON - Orleans County resident Susan Dunklee has pre-qualified for the 2014 Olympic games in Sochi, Russia.
The 27-year-old earned one of four spots on the American woman’s team that will represent the United States in the Biathlete competition. This combines cross country skiing and rifle shooting accuracy.

CITY SCHOOL BUDGET SEEKS HIKE

NEWPORT CITY - The Newport City Elementary School Board will ask voters to approve a school budget with a 6.44 percent increase. The board presented the proposed budget to the city council Monday evening.
Principal Stephen Earley said the city school board is asking for slightly more than the state average, which is a 5.5 percent increase.
"We are unique in that we're growing," said Earley. "It's not just little growth; we are growing a good deal."
More students mean more state reimbursement.

DOES NCU NEED A COP ON THE BEAT?

NEWPORT - A request by the human resources committee to investigate adding a school resource officer sparked a lively debate at last night's North Country Union High School Board meeting. The school budget to be considered at town meeting in March does not include funding for the position.

WHAT TO DO WITH AN EMPTY SCHOOL

MORGAN – Nearly one year ago, the residents of Morgan decided to close the school and tuition the students out. What to do with the building still remains up in the air.
The Morgan School Board of Directors held a meeting Tuesday evening to discuss the matter. The meeting was held at the State Police barracks in Derby because the school is too cold for a meeting.

Seniors Celebrate With 69-49 Win Over BFA Fairfax

ORLEANS–Whether they were motivated by the Lake Region Pep Band's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner or not, I will never know, but the Ranger boys came out firing on all cylinders, out-scoring BFA Fairfax 25-6 in the opening quarter en-route to the 69-49 win over the Bullets.
"We really competed tonight," said junior Clint Provoncha. "We have not had as good of an effort as we wanted in the last few games. Now it is getting a lot better as we start making our move towards the play-offs."

DRUG CLINIC EYES MOVE

NEWPORT CITY - For the past seven and a half years, the Behavioral Health Services (BAART) dispensed methadone from a van at the recycling center on Coventry Street. Now officials from the organization want to dispense the drug from a Union Street site, the same site a gunman recently tried to rob for drugs.
