COVENTRYâYesterday, voters directed the select board to investigate getting its own fire department.
The Newport City Fire Department handles most of the calls. In general, Newport City Fire responds to 22 calls a year in Coventry. However, not all of those are fire calls. The Orleans Fire Department or the Newport Center Fire Department also handles some calls if those firehouses are closer to the emergency location than Newport City.
ST. JOHNSBURY, VT - Omar Rodriguez, 35, of St. Johnsbury, found himself behind bars following a shooting in the Job Lots parking lot in St. Johnsbury Monday. He is being held at the Northeast Community Correctional Center on $150,000 bail. Rodriguez faces charges of attempted murder, two counts of kidnapping, assault and robbery, interference with access to medical treatment, and violation of a relief from abuse order.
DERBY, VT - In what appears to be a change of heart, the Public Service Board (PSB) issued an order on Mar. 2 that seems to run contrary to verbal statements made by PSB member John Cotter, sitting without any other board members present, made at a Feb. 13 pre-hearing conference.
NEWPORTâIt is going to be a tough battle for the 5-15 North Country girls basketball team on Wednesday when they take on the 15-5 Rice Green Knights in South Burlington.
In the team's two meetings, the number two seeded Rice handily beat the Falcons by an average of twenty-four points, utilizing their size to overpower the Falcons.
North Country was hoping to get a first round contest with Colchester, a team that they match-up with more favorably, and thus an easier road through the bracket.
Davis–– Leslie, beloved husband and soul mate of Dee Davis, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 after a brief illness. NEWPORT, VT - Area firefighters were called to 17 Main Street, Newport City, around 6 PM yesterday. No smoke was seen but fire hoses were deployed.
The Newport Daily Express will report on the incident as soon as we learn anything.
NEWPORT, VT - Road barriers and signs warning that the Long Bridge is closed are in place and work is ready to begin. This will be the scene for the next 19-months as state contracted crews replace the bridge.
Just wait until the paving begins on Main Street! The state will spend the summer paving US 5, right through Newport and up towards Derby.
In the meantime, traffic is being rerouted through the Interstate 91 access road and down US 5 (East Main Street).
Traffic is already beginning to get backed up.
BRIGHTON â Fire destroyed a home at 540 Lake Shore Drive in Brighton yesterday.
Firefighters were called to the home around 9:15 a.m. Upon arrival, the structure was fully engulfed and the garage had collapsed, said Fire Chief Rick Hannux. He said several witnesses said they heard explosions, which were believed to be the cause, possibly gas tanks inside the garage.
NEWPORT CITY â Judge Robert Bent handed down a two-to-five year sentence, all suspended with the exception of six months, to a West Charleston man for burglary of an occupied dwelling.
Everardus Proper, 34, entered a guilty plea to the felony charge in Orleans County Court Wednesday, Feb. 29.
On Aug. 21, 2011, Melissa Dobson of Barton told Trooper Debra Munson that sometime between 4 and 4:30 a.m. she was awakened by a man rummaging through her things in her bedroom.
