Newport Council Bans Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

The Express Celebrates 1960s With Commemorative Book

The Sixties Generation: peace, love, and rock-n-roll. Sometimes referred to as the Swinging Sixties, this decade conjures up images of wild and rebellious times. But the sixties were much more than that. It was a defining chapter in history. It was a time of profound social and political change, and a time of very significant historical events in the U.S. and around the world.
The Newport Daily Express is publishing a book highlighting the era. Individuals will be able to read the firsthand accounts of what was happening throughout the entire decade.

LR Students Propose Mentoring Program For Freshmen

West Charleston Man Held On Bail After Denying Charge He Drugged, Sexually Assaulted School Girl

NEWPORT CITY - A West Charleston man was held at the Northern State Correctional Facility on $500,000 bail Tuesday after pleading not guilty to felony charges of kidnapping, sexual assault, and sexual assault using drugs to impair.
If Michael McFarland, 30, makes bail he must stay at least 300 feet away from his alleged victim, her family, her home, her vehicle, and her school, and he may not initiate or maintain contact with any female under 18 unless otherwise approved by the court.

Dirty 40 Productions Adds New Race to Cycling Calender

NEWPORT–There are no two ways about it; Anthony Moccia and Heidi Myers are cycling enthusiasts.
It is not uncommon to see them cruising around the Northeast Kingdom on two wheels, exploring new roads, or traversing over old favorites.
Last year the pair looked to put that love of cycling to good use, and they created the Dirty 40 race, and named their new company Dirty 40 Productions.
This year they have added a new race to their schedule called the Rasputitsa. To find out about it, see the Express on Wednesday 4-9-14.

John Castle Accepts NCSU Superintendent Position

DERBY - A successful weekend of negotiating with John Castle, superintendent of Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union, has resulted in his hiring as superintendent of North Country Supervisory Union (NCSU). Robert Kern submitted his resignation a month ago after deciding to retire from the position.

Lowell Firefighters Train For Wind Tower Rescue

LOWELL - A handful of Lowell firefighters plus one from Troy spent their weekend training on a 30-foot tower type structure in the event they need to rescue someone on one of the Kingdom Community Wind Farm towers.
