DERBY - With years of ground work already done, including a 2006 traffic study, a public hearing and a proposal to locate a Walmart Super Center in downtown Newport, the recent announcement that a store will be sited between Shattuck Hill Road and US RT5 in Derby has been met with much anticipation for some. But long before the doors will open, the project must undergo a lengthy public review process that will involve several major players.
COVENTRY â€“ Officials from the stateâ€™s largest landfill are asking to increase the facilities tonnage from 2,500 tons to 5,000 tons a day, however the annual total tonnage would be limited to 600,000 tons.
The landfill is currently permitted to handle 370,000 tons.
â€śWeâ€™re not looking to expand the landfill itself,â€ť said John Gay, an engineer with New England Waste Services of Vermont (NEWS). â€śWeâ€™re looking to increase the tonnage that we take at the facility.â€ť
BURLINGTON, VT â€“ Carl Coker, 37, of Island Pond, was sentenced to 100 months imprisonment for conspiracy to manufacture five grams or more of methamphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance. He was one of 13 Northeast Kingdom residents indicted for methamphetamine-related crimes.
United States District Judge William K. Sessions, III, also ordered that Coker serve four years supervised release after his incarceration ends.
CABOTâ€“The UCA Girls picked up their fourth win of the season while the Crusader boys loss their third of the year as the two teams earned a split on Monday evening.
For the girls, it was a well-rounded effort, utilizing their triangle and two defense to shut down the Cabot bigs while getting offense from multiple players in their 39-38 win.
â€śOur play movement was the best it has been all year and the balance of scoring was nice to see,â€ť said coach Molly Smith.
Laura Libby had ten points while Christina Maxwell and Olivia Foster each had nine.
ORLEANSâ€“Fans in Ranger Country were treated to arguably the best basketball game that the Lake Region girls have played this season as the Lady Rangers defeated the top-seeded, undefeated BFA Fairfax Bullets 48-43 on Monday night.
"We played great," said coach Mark Tinker. "We got contributions from a lot of players, rotating in a lot of kids, and I thought everybody made significant contributions."
The team has been trending upwards since their game against Enosburg, something the coach expanded on after the game.
DERBY, VT â€“ A tractor trailer rolled over on Interstate-91 at the Derby exit around 3 p.m. Monday.
The truck, which belonged to Transport Bernieres of Quebec, was hauling large rolls of newsprint paper valued between $600 and $800 a roll. There were no injuries in the crash.
The Vermont State Police, Orleans County Sheriff, the Derby Line Fire Department, Newport Ambulance Service and others responded to the scene. The roads were slippery with ice and snow at the time. No other information was available as of press time.
NEWPORT CENTER â€“ Fire officials are crediting the owners of Guay General Repair in Newport Center for saving their own property from disaster Monday. Firefighters responded to the business on Route 100 at about 12:30 p.m.
Dan Guay said that he used fire extinguishers and a high pressure washer to knock down the fire.
DERBY CENTER - North Country Union Junior High School Board member Richard Nelson asked board members and school administrators last week what the policy is on having faculty and staff be immunized from the flu.
â€śI can't believe the number of people who don't get the flu shot.â€ť Nelson observed. â€śWith the number of people employed here â€“ and with all the students â€“ these schools are incubators for education and disease.â€ť
GLOVER â€“ Fire destroyed a century-old landmark on Route 16 in Glover early Saturday morning.
Firefighters responded to a structure fire at the Conley Mill, formally known as the Green Mountain Fence Company, around 4:15 a.m. Upon arrival, they found part of a house fully engulfed. No one was in the building when the blaze broke out....
