ORLEANS â€“ Thanks to the Whole School Energy Challenge, Lake Region Union High School reduced its energy consumption by 25 percent, saving taxpayers $15,885, and that was enough to make it the top school in a pilot program.
Efficiency Vermont, Vermont Superintendents Association School Energy Management Program and the Vermont Energy Education Program partnered in the program that ran from May 2011 to April 2012.
NEWPORT CITY â€“ Monday evening the council approved a request by Jim Mulkin of JM & MM, for a six-year tax stabilization.
Mulkin wants to build a new 14,000 square foot building on Duchess Street and add a small addition to an existing building, which currently houses Northeast Kingdom Human Services (NKHS).

Gray has published several books that cover many areas of the paranormal and the supernatural, including her first self-published book â€śRavenâ€ť and a 7-book series â€śVampire Legacy.â€ť
DERBY - Indoor Recreation of Orleans County (IROC) is in the midst of serious financial trouble.
Phil White, the executive director, is making an aggressive effort to stave off foreclosure and keep the doors open with the hope of creating a thriving facility someday. White continues to work without pay.
IROC is in debt for $1.1 million to Community National Bank and U.S. Rural Development and has been unable to make payments. White has sent a letter to each entity and explained a strategic plan to save IROC and to ask for more time to see it through before foreclosure.
Brooks–– Lincoln Lee, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2012 at Longhouse Residence in Spencer, at the age of 91. Services will be Friday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. ORLEANS COUNTY - U.S. News and World Report has named two local high schools as the best in the nation.
Lake Region Union High School received a Silver Medal Award and North Country Union High School received a Bronze Medal Award.
This is the first time Lake Region received the award and the second for North Country. As far as state ranking is concerned, Lake Region scored as number seven and North Country scored 13. Stowe High School scored number one in the state and received a Gold Medal Award.

NEWPORT CITY â€“ Chittenden County Stateâ€™s Attorney T.J. Donovan, who is taking on William Sorrell for the office of Vermont Attorney General, made a whirlwind stop in Newport, Monday.
Donovan and Sorrell are both Democrats.Â
â€śI think itâ€™s time for aÂ change,â€ť said Donovan, when asked why he was going against another Democrat. â€śI think after 15 years we need new ideas, new energy and new engagement from the office of the attorney general.â€ť
Donovan feels there has been too much political rhetoric on the issue of Vermont Yankee.
NEWPORT, VT - Repeated failure to complete the diversion program for the theft of an $8.99 can of Maxell Duster has led Judge Robert Bent to impose sentence on Brandon Cote of Newport.
Newport City Police Officer Travis Bingham was dispatched to the Rite Aid store in Newport on April 29, 2010 following a call from store manager Arla Mason. Mason advised Bingham that she witnessed the theft of a can of Maxell Duster, which is used to dust off keyboards, after she observed a man stuffing the can into his pants.
The North Country Union High School Girls Golf team wrapped up their season with a very respectable fourth place finish at the Division I State Finals at the Proctor Pittsford Country Club on Tuesday.
The best two out of three scores are tallied for each team in the tournament. The NCU team was represented by seniors Bailey Walker and Eilish Muir, and sophomore Paige Gagnon.
