ORLEANS COUNTY – In the wake of the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, which left 20 children and six adults dead, local schools and administrators are taking action. As a first step, Dr. Robert Kern, superintendent of the North Country Supervisory Union, has issued an open letter to the community that addresses concerns and policies in place. Doug Westin, principal of Derby Elementary School, is also working on a letter to parents of Derby and Morgan students.
DERBY LINE – Looking for a bit of Christmas cheer? Look no further than the Louis and Gerry Barber residence where the couple has taken decorating to a new level.
Like many families, the Barbers decorate the exterior of their home with lights. On the inside of their home, the family has a Christmas village complete with tiny illuminated houses and a model railroad train set. Some of the decorations are even animated.
DERBY – The Family Dollar Store, with locations in Newport City and Orleans, is expanding its Northeast Kingdom territory once again. This time the company is opening a store on US RT 5, across from McDonald’s.
The store will be in a new building on property owned by Jim Mulkin.
The new store will be about 8,000 square feet, the same as the store on Main Street in Orleans. The store in downtown Newport is 10,000 square feet.

NEWPORT CITY – Over a 100 families with young children had a chance to put the trials and tribulations of everyday life aside for a few hours Saturday and enjoy a real hometown Christmas, thanks primarily to Newport City native and Burlington real estate developer Tony Pomerleau. The dinner was for families who may not have had the Christmas they’d like to have.
NEWPORT– In 1995, the Orleans County Sheriff's Department closed the jail situated behind the county courthouse in Newport and moved next door to the Daley House during a transition period before moving to their current Derby Road location.
Built in 1903, the mail order jail (Literally – the cells were built by Pauly Jail Company of St. Louis, Missouri, and shipped by train to Newport.) was created to eventually hold 45 prisoners. But the jail house and administrative offices have sat idle for 17 years and are starting to show signs of neglect.

The crash occurred on Aug. 5, 2012, around 9 AM, on VT RT 105 in North Troy, VT. Police reported that Gabree had "failed to maintain her lane of travel" and crossed the centerline before striking the Moran's vehicle.
Edmund Moran died at the scene and Margaret Moran died later at North Country Hospital.
NEWPORT–The weekend's most anticipated game in Orleans County had to be the showdown between MVU and North Country in boy's basketball action.
The NCU gym was packed with the biggest crowd I have ever witnessed, all waiting to see how the new look Falcons fared against the state's top player Matthieu St.Amour and the rest of the Thunderbirds.
Players from Lake Region and UCA flooded into the gym, eager for play to begin.
JAY–Whitney Bernier poked home a loose puck on the left side of the net with 7:49 remaining to complete North Country's 3-2 come from behind win over Middlebury in girl's hockey action on Saturday evening.
The Falcons were not at full strength for the contest as multiple players were absent, most notably defenseman Emily Doty, who was attending a school-related function.
Doty's absence forced coach Claude Paul to move some players around, but the coach was able to mix and match with success and the team moved their record to 1-1.
