New Life at the Express & Standard Building

NEWPORT, VT - “When I first met my wife she was sitting right over there in the corner,” Roger Cartee of Newport said as he toured the building, located on Central Street in Newport, which at one time housed the Express and Standard newspaper and later the Newport Daily Express. “She worked here in the main office and I was a part-time sports writer.”

Council Candidates: Newport Can Do Better

NEWPORT CITY – Four city residents are facing off at a chance to win one of two seats on the Newport City Council. Incumbents John Wilson and Tim de la Bruere are going up against Mark Guyette and Peter Holden.

De la Bruere is seeking his third two-year seat. He likes the council because there are no political lines. Instead, it is five “everyday people” in the city who come together to deal with municipal issues. 

DECA Store Brings in the Gold

NEWPORT, VT - The School-Based Enterprise (SBE) at North Country Career Center of Newport, VT, was among 137 school stores in the United States achieving Gold Level Certification (or Gold Level Re-certification) this year and will be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The students who worked on the certification were senior Alisha Duncan, juniors Tyler Paxman and Aidan Smith, assisted by advisors Sue Birchard and Lydia Alexander.

Nordic Falcons Finish Strong as They Head to States

EAST BURKE–The North Country Nordic girls closed out the regular season on a high note, taking first overall at the Lyndon Institute hosted race on the Kingdom Trails of Burke Mountain.
Haley-Jo Tetreault and Lindsay Cotnoir were neck and neck battling for second place, and it was Tetreault who edged out Cotnoir by two seconds, finishing with a time of 22:03.
Senior Erika Fortin's 24:00 was good enough for seventh place, and she was followed by a pair of sophomores, Adele Woodmansee in tenth, and Jane Dandurand in eleventh.

Ash Wednesday Fire Attacks Mansonville Church

MANSONVILLE, QUE - One of the three active churches in Potton Township was seriously damaged Wednesday morning after a fire broke out in its steeple. Around 8:30 a.m., a passerby happened to notice smoke billowing out of the steeple of the St-Cajetan Catholic Church, which was rebuilt following a fire in 1950. The passerby called the local fire department.
The church is on Principale Street.

What’s In A Barn?

DERBY – Youngsters visiting the Orleans County Fair Grounds in Barton this summer will have an opportunity to learn where food comes from thanks to two mini barns built by North Country Career Center Building Trades Students. The class will build two additional ones.
The building trades class, which consists of North Country Union High School and Lake Region Union High School students, meets at the North Country land lab in Derby.

Committee Members Sought to Select New Career Center Director

NEWPORT CITY – The North Country Union High School Board has started the process of finding a new director for North Country Career Center.
Director Richard Hoffman handed in his resignation to the Human Resources Committee last week. The full board approved it at the Tuesday meeting. Hoffman will continue to serve the career center until June 30.

Fourth Quarter Woes Sink Falcons in 54-40 Loss Against CVU

NEWPORT–Ten seconds.
That is all it took, just ten ticks of the clock for the face the North Country-Champlain Valley Union girls basketball game to go from one direction to another.
The Falcons went from being down 37-35 with 5:30 left in the game to being down 46-35 with 5:20 left to play, thanks to the Redhawks' Sofia Lozon.
Lozon knocked down a three, the first points of the quarter, got fouled, nailed two from the line, hit for two off of a steal, got fouled again, and again made both of her shots. North Country never recovered, eventually losing the contest 54-40.
