Lakebridge Project Well Underway

NEWPORT, VT - Construction on the Lakebridge project in Newport City, where Sleeper Place once stood, is expected to be complete by October.
Spates Construction is working on the project and the following subcontractors are also on the job: New Hampshire Demo, SSXcavating Corp., Roger G. Gosselin Inc., Giroux Masonry, LWI Metalworks, Village Builders, Nicom Coatings Corporation, Benoure Plumbing & Heating Inc., Alpine Sprinkler, Jourdan's Electrical Contracting, Brodeur Construction LLC, Conrad Construction Inc., and Magog Roofing.

Derby Residents Seek Contract Against Damages in Wind Project

DERBY - Vicky and Dan Lewis of Derby, along with other Derby residents, continued last Monday to push the Derby Select Board to take action in the proposed Derby Line Wind Project.
Vicky Lewis said she would like the town to sign a comprehensive contract with the developer that would address the issues of concern including potential health effects, noise, and property values.

Defendant’s Bail Lowered to $25K

NEWPORT CITY – Tuesday Judge Robert Bent held a West Burke man on $25,000 bail for allegedly chasing his former girlfriend, Diane Mansfield, down with his car and threatening to kill himself in front of her.
William Wray, 47, faces a felony charge of burglary, misdemeanor charges of reckless endangerment, gross or negligence operation of a motor vehicle and domestic assault.
Wray entered not guilty pleas on all charges.
March 2, Wray allegedly broke into Mansfield’s house and waited for her to return home.

Holland Pulls Wonson Out of Derby Wind Debate

HOLLAND - The Holland Select Board Monday night decided that Mitch Wonson would no longer represent the board in the Derby Line wind project. This follows on the heels of Wonson being defeated by Aaron Nadeau for a position on the Holland Planning Commission at the last Town Meeting.
Wonson was on the Holland Planning Commission in 2007 and wrote the town plan. The plan recommended the adoption of a town policy on commercial energy generation facilities, and a policy was adopted in November. That policy is now on hold in Holland after some uproar occurred in the town.

Cota, U-16 Shamrocks Heading to Dallas for Nationals

NEWPORT – The Vermont Shamrocks U-16 girls hockey team took second place at the Tier II New England Hockey championships this past weekend, earning the squad a chance to compete for the national title in Dallas next week. Usually only one team is sent from the region, but many at USA Hockey believed that they were leaving out one of the best teams in the country and are allowing the Shamrocks to compete for the title.

Gilpin–– Elizabeth, formerly of Newport and Coventry, passed away on March 16, 2012 at the age of 92. Funeral arrangements are in charge of Guare & Sons Funeral Home of Montpelier. A memorial service will be held at The Gardens. A graveside service and interment at Coventry Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

Local Physician and Nurse Join a Medical Mission to Ethiopia

NEWPORT, VT - Some people take time off to travel to tropical paradises such as Florida, the Caribbean, or Hawaii to relax and unwind. Larry Sisson, MD and his wife, Nancy Sisson, LPN, as well as two other friends in the medical community went on a 10-day trip in November, but it was far from a vacation.
The group traveled to the rural reaches of the African country of Ethiopia to provide the people of the impoverished nation with modern healthcare.

State Auditor Seeks New Fraud Laws

MONTPELIER – In its 2011 report on embezzlement, which was released this last January, Marquet International named Vermont first in the nation for Embezzlement Propensity Factor. The report states that Vermont topped the list of states with highest risk for loss due to embezzlement in 2011.
Vermont was followed by Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Montana, Virginia, Iowa and Idaho.

Pythons Continue Their Winning Ways in Milton

The NEK Python wrestling team spent their St. Patrick’s Day in Milton, and although they did not don any green, they certainly found some gold as three of their wrestlers brought home first place medals.
Josh Roberts, Logan Gerrow, and first year wrestler Tyler Wilson all took home the gold with their performances on Saturday.
As for the rest of the Pythons, the brother act of Aiden and Malakai Maher came away with second place honors.
