NCU Tennis Keeps Rolling, Sweeps Middlebury 7-0

NEWPORT–North Country's boys’ tennis team is on a tearing things up. They picked up their fourth straight win on Saturday, a 7-0 blanking of Middlebury, to bump up their record to 4-1 on the season.
In singles play, Dave Durivage, playing in the number one position, staved off what coach Gary Atchinson called "an early bombardment" and won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Consistency was the name of the game for number two singles’ player Travers Parsons-Grayson, as he won easily 6-1, 6-1.
Thomas Durivage also had a smooth go of it, winning 6-0, 6-1.

Two 1sts’ For Columbia as Falcons Take Home 9th Place at Burlington Invitational

BURLINGTON–North Country's boys’ and girls’ track squads combined for a score of 59 points to take home ninth place at the Burlington Invitational on Saturday.
Dylan Columbia was the top performer for the Falcons, taking home first place in the 100 and 200 meter races.
Columbia, along with Josh Brien, Connor Hogan and Nick LeClair took third in the 4x100 as well.
Riley Simoneau also had a good day at the event, winning the shot put with Barry Shelton behind him in sixth place.

NCUHS Girls’ Golf Opening Week

The girls’ golf team had it opening tournament at the Barre Country Club on Monday April 30. The team was represented by freshman Michele Fenimore and returning junior Allison Greenwood. Greenwood is a well know golfing name in the area, and Michele is the granddaughter of Reg Rhodes, another respected (think dedicated) player of the game. Both girls shot in the low 70’s for the nine hole tournament. They did report that when they were in bunkers, their sand shots got them out with no trouble. And Allison learned that a golf ball will actually skip through a water hazard.

Rangers Run Roughshod Over Stowe in Doubleheader Action

STOWE–The Lake Region Lady Rangers rolled up a pair of impressive wins in doubleheader action Saturday at Stowe, grabbing both ends of the twin bill, 16-0 and 20-3.
In the opener, sophomore hurler Michelle Thibeault toed the rubber and turned in her finest performance of the season, twirling an efficient 3-hitter in pocketing her first career shut-out.

Sunday's Wind Rally Draws International Experts

DERBY LINE - Two world-renowned speakers will address protesters at the anti-Derby Line Wind Project rally in Derby Line, VT/Stanstead, QC, this Sunday.
Mark Duchamp will appear in person to talk about the impact of wind turbines on endangered bird populations.
Duchamp is the executive director of the European Platform Against Windfarms (http://www.epaw.org/about_us.php?lang=en), president of Save the Eagles International (http://savetheeaglesinternational.org/), and chairman of the World Council for Nature (http://wcfn.org/).

Peter Gage says goodbye to music students at LRUHS

ORLEANS – Peter Gage, after decades of helping students make beautiful music, will wave his baton for one last time at the Lake Region Union High School Concert Monday, May 7.
Gage currently teaches the general music, vocal music, instrumental music and jazz music programs at Lake Region. Being the only music teacher at a high school can be a challenge, said Gage, who’s more in tune to instrumental than vocal.

Derby Select Board: No To Commercial Wind

DERBY, VT - A special meeting was held Wednesday night to decide if the Derby Select Board would endorse a motion to direct attorney Richard Saudek to open “discussions” with Encore Redevelopment over the proposed construction of two 430 feet tall wind turbines in the town.
The answer was "no."

Falcon Tennis Boys Dominate Montpelier in 5-2 Win

NEWPORT–On bright and beautiful afternoon The North Country boys' tennis team earned their third victory of the year with a 5-2 win over Montpelier.
"It was a dominating win," said coach Gary Atchinson. "Four of the twelve sets that we won were at 'love.' That shows dominance and perseverance in not letting up."
Once again the Falcons spotted their opponents a 1-0 lead, forfeiting the number two doubles match, burt the coach is looking forward to getting Steve Raboin back soon so they can compete as a full squad.
On the court the Falcons had the upper hand for most of the afternoon.
