Arson investigation underway in Albany

March 27, 2012

ALBANY - Fire destroyed a building on Pitkin Road in Albany Saturday night.
The Albany Fire Department responded to a mobile home fire and found the structure fully engulfed. They were unable to save any portion of the building, which was primarily used for storage and wasn't occupied.
No one was at the property at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
Later, investigators determined the fire was intentionally set and it as been ruled an arson.

Woman Alleges Rape at Bar, Accused Held on $25K

NEWPORT CITY – Nicholas Woodard, 21, of Coventry, has been charged with sexual assault following a sexual encounter with a woman in the bathroom of a local bar. The woman, who was described by one witness as being about 50 years of age and whose name was withheld by police, told police that she had been raped by a man named "Chris" at Griff's Pub and that the rape had been video taped by other people in the bar.
Woodard pleaded not guilty to the charge; Judge Robert Bent held Woodard on $25,000 bail Tuesday.

Police Say Body May Be That of Missing St. J. Mom

ST. JOHNSBURY, VT - Police are not confirming that the body of a woman found near the Comerford Dam Road in Barnet belongs to that of missing St. Johnsbury Academy physics teacher and basketball coach Melissa Jenkins until a positive identification can be made. In the meantime, the body has been sent to Burlington for an autopsy.
Although police are calling the death suspicious, they are releasing very few details, Major Ed Ledo said yesterday evening.

Post Cards to Soldiers Debut at MAC

NEWPORT, VT - The "Art Post: Positive Images of Support by Our Vermont Art Students," has opened at the MAC Center for the Arts, Newport, with almost 1,500 postcards created by students in the North Country School District.

Lyndon Hosts Green Expo

LYNDON – Sorry Kermit, but it's easy to be green. 
Forty-five exhibitors proved that fact at the NEK Energy Expo held at Lyndon State College Saturday. The Northeastern Vermont Development Association sponsored the fourth annual event. Exhibits included hybrid and electric cars, biomass burn trailers, a solar contractor and everything else that’s environmentally friendly. 
Renewable energy and energy conservation is very important. As Lorna Higgs, project manager for NVDA pointed out, fuel oil prices continue to rise and most energy experts believe that will continue. 

Fresh Food Goes Mobile

NEWPORT – The Green Mountain Farm to School (GMFS) program is taking to the roads this summer with a mobile unit allowing for easy access to locally grown, affordable foods.
This project comes through support from Senator Bernie Sanders and the USDA Farmers’ Market Promotion Program.
In October, Sanders announced two grants totaling $165,555 for the Green Mountain Farm Direct and the Northeast Organic Farming Association to expand access to locally-produced food for Vermont seniors, low-income families and others.

NEK Blue Devils Take Vermont Sting IceBreaker Tournament

BARRE/MONTPELIER–The 7/8 grade NEK Blue Devils took part in the 5th annual Vermont Sting IceBreaker this past weekend, and came home with a perfect 4-0 record, claiming the 8th grade division title.
In the opening game, the Blue Devils battled back against the Littleton Crusaders to force overtime on an Austin Roberge 3 with 2 seconds on the clock. Noah Racine’s 3 to start OT gave the blue and white the lead that they never looked back from, winning 62-58. Roberge led the way with 34 points and Danny Epinette chipped in with 17 points and 13 boards.
