NEWPORT, VT - Youâ€™ve seen television programs that feature high speed police chases in big cities. But, they donâ€™t happen here, or do they?
Newport City Police Chief J. Paul Duquette said his officers have a couple to a half dozen chases every year.
NEWPORTâ€“Already 3-0 at home this season, the North Country boys won their fourth game of the year in dramatic fashion on Tuesday evening as they picked up the 70-68 victory over St. Johnsbury on the back of Colton White's game winner in double-overtime.
"It was very, very intense," said White of the game, "We played with a lot of heart. In the beginning our offense wasn't really flowing, so we had to gain some momentum to get it going."
CRAFTSBURY â€“ The Craftsbury Academy Lady Chargers hosted the Cabot Huskies Tuesday night as part of a Varsity girls/boys twin-bill between the two schools. The Chargers started off slow, but once the team settled into the game, they never looked back.
They led at the end of 1 by a score of 11-7, with 5 different players scoring points for the blue and white. But, it was the 2nd quarter that blew the game wide open. Craftsbury held the Huskies to just a single point, while they torched the hardwood by pumping in 16, including 8 by Hattie Brochu, to build a 27-8 halftime lead.
WESTMOREâ€“ The North Country nordic team hosted their first meet of the season this past weekend at Mt. Hor. On the Boys side, MMU emerged as the team victor, scoring 21 points while the Falcons took home 10th place with 206 pts.
MMU went 1, 2, 3 with Ben Hegman, Henry Harmeyer, and NIck Shallow in the top spots. The Falcons top finisher was Brian DeLaBruere with a time of 17:34, a shade over three minutes behind the leader Hegman.
COVENTRY â€“ Peteâ€™s Greens of Craftsbury has plans to expand its operations to a field across the road from the New England Waste Services (NEWS, also known as Casella) landfill site. Peteâ€™s Greens wants to use 10-15 acres of the 100-acre property for green houses and is attempting to broker a deal with New England Waste Services to use the site.
Monday, Amy Skelton of Pete's Greens and Alison Low of the Northeastern Vermont Development Association met with the Coventry Select Board in hopes of applying for a state grant to study the feasibility of building green houses on the property.
DERBY - Developers who want to construct two industrial size wind turbines on two farms just east of the Village of Derby Line met with Derby officials at a private meeting Tuesday. One turbine would be located on Grandview Farm owned by the Davis family, and the other on Smugglers Hill Farm owned by Jayne and Jonathan Chase.
The purpose of the meeting was to prepare for the select boardâ€™s public meeting scheduled for Jan. 9 at 6:30 PM and to introduce a new partner in the project, Jeffrey Hollender, a business strategy consultant from Burlington.

Jennifer Ann Cohun, 31, of Toad Pond Road died Saturday, December 31, 2011 at her home. Jennifer was born in Bellows Falls, VT on August 29, 1980, the daughter of Jack and Christine (Mitchell) Cohun.
NEWPORT - Newport merchants are reporting positive news for the holiday shopping season. Some say they did about the same as last year, but others say sales were way up.
Jim McKimm with the Memphremagog Arts Collaborative (MAC) said business was up this season 60 percent over last year. â€śThe artists are very excited about it,â€ť he added. The MAC stayed opened later hours in December leading up to Christmas and that decision was a good one, McKimm said, one that paid off with extra shoppers.
DERBY, VT - Well over 600 revelers from all over Orleans and northern Essex County participated in IROCâ€™s 6th Annual New Yearâ€™s Eve Bash with fun and games throughout the afternoon and evening. Mark Shelton and his Captain Radical Pirate Show highlighted the event.
We brought the arcade and the ping pong, pool, and air hockey tables down to the main floor and Wilsonâ€™s Entertainment provided play without charge for the entire day and night. They were busy as were the bounce houses and the water slide.
