James (Jim) Joseph Raftery III, 33, passed peacefully from this world on Friday, June 29, 2012 in Fort Lauderdale, FL, after a long battle with cancer. On that day our world suffered the loss of a kind and gentle soul, a young man with compassion, courage and a fearless love of life.
ORLEANS COUNTY- The delivery of wind turbine sections to the Lowell Mountain wind site is underway.
This is a key milestone for the construction of Green Mountain Powerâ€™s wind turbine project on Lowell Mountain. The 21 industrial sized turbines' components are being transported via more than 100 trucks.
An oversized load rolled through Island Pond, Charleston, and Derby Friday before continuing on through Irasburg and to Lowell. Other deliveries are also heading to Lowell following a different route from Albany, NY.
LOWELL - Katherine Sims, a strong supporter of local decision making and local school boards, hopes to serve voters in the Orleans-Lamoille district for the Vermont House. Sims is going up against Republican incumbent Mark Higley.
Sims, a Progressive, hopes to be on both the Progressive and Democratic tickets.
â€śI am passionate about making a difference for our community," said Sims.
NEWPORT, VT - For those who have been waiting for the paving project to hit Newport City, today is your day.
The Frank W. Whitcomb Construction Corp. will begin repaving U.S. 5 from the Coventry-Newport line to the Newport-Derby line starting at 7 AM today. The project is expected to be completed around Thanksgiving. So make sure you plan for the extra time in and around Newport City during your travels.
Construction will include grinding the existing pavement, resurfacing, signs, sidewalk and guardrail work, signal light improvements and other items.
NEWPORTâ€“Thursday marked the opening round of the inaugural four-course, four-day Northeast Kingdom Golf Tour.
The event features kids ages 8-15 taking on four of the area's premiere golf courses.
Not only does the tour allow some of the area's more established youngsters a chance to compete with other players, it serves as a way to potentially instill a love for the game that will stick with the kids as they get older.
Action began at the Newport Country Club, and the tour will feature stops at the golf courses in St. Johnsbury, Orleans and will wrap up at Jay Peak.
DERBY - Derby Town Clerk Nicole Daigle has accepted a job offer with a private company. Daigleâ€™s plan is to train a person in her position.
Come Town Meeting in March, Daigle will have fully prepared a viable candidate for the job and will not seek re-election.
Daigle has worked for the town of Derby for 19 years and as town clerk for 18 years. She has also served as town treasurer and school treasurer for many years.
NEWPORT, VT - Performing surgeries, including hip surgeries, are nothing new for Dr. Durward Starr of North Troy. Before retiring he performed more surgeries than he can remember, but as a retired veterinarian, all of those surgeries were performed on animals.
NEWPORT - Terry Hitchcock of Prior Lake, Minn., has been called Minnesotaâ€™s version of Forrest Gump. He earned the title when, in 1996, he ran the equivalent of a marathon (26 miles) for 75 straight days, running from St. Paul, Minn. to the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.
His 2,000 mile journey has been transformed into the subject of a book and two movies. Among other honors, he has received the Distinguished Medal of Merit, bestowed upon him by President Ronald Reagan for his good works to humanity.
GLOVER â€“ Rep. Sam Young, who lives on the land his ancestors moved to just after the Civil War, is looking forward to serving the people of the Northeast Kingdom.
Young, a Democrat, has served the voters in the Orleans-Caledonia district for one term alongside Republican Vicki Strong in the two-member district.
â€śI like the work and Iâ€™ve learned a lot,â€ť said Young. Young said voters invested two years in him and it took him that long to get good at it. â€śIf I spend two years of my life doing something, I want to get good at it.â€ť
DERBY â€“ Derby is one of the top runners for the Pet Safe dog park contest and is teetering with one other town, Mountain House, CA, between first and second place.
Derby entered the contest last year and did not win, but did well competing against other towns with much larger populations. Now there is a per capita contest with a $25,000 winner.
