JERICHOâ€“After performing well in her final two regular season starts, coach Leslie Dunn opted to go with Taylor Blake out of the shute for the Falcons opening round game against Mount Mansfield.
â€śShe was great against Essex and MVU, so I figured we might as well go with her as she performs much better as a starter than as a reliever,â€ť said Dunn.
Blake gave it her all, but MMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, so the coach brought in the ever-reliable Kayla Descheneau mid-way through the second to finish out the contest.
WATERBURYâ€“Harwood was the best team while Matt Morin of Lake Region was the top individual at the Division II sectionals on Wednesday.
Morin shot a 1 over 73 to earn the win.
The highlight of Morinâ€™s round was a 17th hole Eagle to pull ahead of Harwood's Brooks Curran who finished 2nd with a very nice 76.
Another Lake Region score of note was Carl Obergâ€™s very respectable 88.
It was not quite good enough to send him to States as an individual but still a very good effort on his part.
Team Results were as follows:
Harwood 1st with a total of 326.
Lyndon Institute 2nd with total of 343.
ORLEANS COUNTY - Some Northeast Kingdom residents had tense moments when thunderstorms, hail and a tornado warning moved through the region.
The storms were part of a front that brought hard rain and lightning in the morning. By midday, a cold front with severe thunderstorms moved in and lasted until the evening hours.
Southern Orleans County and Lamoille County were some of the hardest hit areas.
National Weather Service officials were in the region yesterday to determine if any tornadoes touched down.Â
NEWPORT CITY â€“ A former University of Vermont (UVM) Extension employee, who worked out of the Newport office, has admitted to stealing more than $45,000 over the course of about five years from her employer.
Celine Bernier, 47, of Newport, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of embezzlement in Orleans Country Criminal Court on May 23. She is facing time in prison.
In September 2010, UVM police learned of a possible fraud or embezzlement case at the UVM Extension office in Newport.
NEWPORT, VT - Ty Morrison Jr. of Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport negotiated the dismissal of two counts of burglary and one count of possession of burglary tools in exchange for pleading guilty to three counts of burglary. Each conviction will be punished with 2 years and 6 months to 7 years in jail, running concurrently. Morrison will also have to pay restitution to be determined at a future date.
DERBY â€“ In what was going to be a sad weekend for patrons of Hellbilly Hideaway turned out to be anything but.
Hellbilly Hideaway is located at the Border Motel on Route 5.
Up until last week, co-owners Serena and Ira Morgan faced closing the popular bar because the town planned to sell the property at a tax auction. The Village of Derby also shut off the water because the owner had not paid the water taxes. However, that has all changed and the future of the bar is safe for now.
DERBYâ€“â€“ The developer for the proposed Derby Line Wind Project filed to withdraw from the Vermont Public Service Board (PSB) proceedings on May 24th. Encore Redevelopment of Burlington wanted to construct two turbines, each more than 420 feet tall at the tip of the blade, on two farms in Derby Line. However the developer, Chad Farrell who is withdrawing for now, plans to file again in early 2013, but for only one turbine.
